massaging a 5.6l drive train into a w111-anybody been there?

lowered drivetrain into future home today and it almost fit. removed brake booster assembly, battery tray, power steering hose, shifter select/safety switch(column selector) and now it's almost there. need to alter the firewall to clear the exhaust manifold on the passenger side and maybe the tranny tunnel. obstacles to over come are the motor mounts, hoses at the steering box very close to the exhaust, floor shifter and battery relocation.and that's just day one.appreciate any input

thanks

wow, you're a glutton for punishment...there's a mention of a W111 with a "modern powertrain" in Mercedes Enthusiast magazine this month, with one small pic that doesn't tell much.

What kind of 111 are you trying to put this into? A sedan? convertible? coupe? Some coupes and cabs came with a 3.5 m116, and it's easy to get any m116 or m117 into these with some work. A lot easier than what you're doing, anyway.

If you can find a 280se 4.5 parts car, swap over the entire front end. The steering box and brake booster are different to accomidate the larger v8. Also, the brakes and springs are beefier to handle the weight and power.

I have a 67 250se/c with a 3.5l motor just sitting in it, been that way for 3 years. I've not gotten around to doing anything about making it actually work yet. One of these days. In my case, the car is set up for a clutch, so I'm putting a factory 4-speed on the v8. That should hopefully make it unnecessary to change around the tunnel.

Interesting

I always wondered how hard it would be to install a 5.6 into my 280SEL 4.5. With the early models having mechanical injection and the fact that they come with a 4 speed, it really sounds like a good idea.

Especially if I can get hold of a 300hp Euro engine.

I would love to hear from someone who has already done it.

rummaged through the garage and stumbled across a set of euro exhaust manifolds, swapped them out with the cross-over pipe set-up.it finally stopped raining here today so out with the hoist and eureka, she dropped right in, tight but in. had time to visit the scrap yard and saw a possible solution to the brake booster problem.any body see a problem using a booster from an older 240 or 300 as they are much slimmer than the stock 111 unit
thanks

The booster on the 280se 4.5 interferes with access to the rear plug and head bolts. It's annoying, but it's managable.

The smaller unit should fit, but before you bet your life on it, make sure the car stops well using that booster.
