BTW, the 78 280SE is the intended recipient of the plugs and other ignition parts...the 450SE is next in line after the 280 is in something resembling good mechanical health.

I tried Bosch Plats on my Jeep.

After 10k miles, starting, efficiency and power were horrendous. A removal of one plug showed the center electrode had receded a good half millimeter inside the insulator. They were all like this. I replaced them with Champion Truck plugs which are still in it.

Not trying to compare a Benz engine to a Jeep one, just my experience with the plat plugs.

I appreciate everyone's input...it would appear that the copper Bosch Supers are just fine and that appeals to my tight-wad side. I paid $1.19 a piece so I guess I can't complain.

Platinum schmatinum

I just replaced my plugs with the correct NGK Bosch equivalent in my M130, gapped correctly. Engine pulls like a freight train from 0-90 MPH, and starts instantly at the turn of the key, red hot or stone cold. Still with points no less!

Waste of money for this application IMHO. Never met a top shelf vintage MB mechanic that had any use for them in these older cars. In the right application, they are probably fantastic.

Platinum schmatinum, that's what I say for the older MB.

Well, I got my Bosch Platinums from Advance Auto Parts. For less than $2 each, I won't lose any sleep over the wasted money. With the Platinums I installed last fall, my Fintail just made the round trip to Centerville Va (about 70 miles) with no trouble. I can always stick the regular plugs back in if there's a problem.

Happy Motoring, Mark

I've been running Bosch Platinums in my M130 for about two years now, for over 10K miles or so. I have not had any problems, absolutely no fouling. I am using a point based system, no transistor switchbox. Just FYI, but I think the posts against platinums are just BS.
