Carb and FI Cam differences (M130 280S/SE)
Does anyone know if there are any differences between the carbureted and fuel injected cams in M130 motors? Timing, Lift etc....
The reason I ask is I have a 1971 280SE that has decided to eat its camshaft.... I have a spare cam (and accompanying towers) from a carbureted motor. Am I going to regret switching these? -Eric |

Worn out rockers is usually what eats the lobes, check the rockers for core steel wearing through the hardened surfaces. Dunno about camshaft differences.

You need to either get hold of the Factory workshop manual, which will have the cam specs ,or ring the classic center in Irvine(Cal.) and get an answer,The cams have a number stamped on the rear end to signify which grind they have, and yes they are different.the EFI cam will have a longer duration and closer lobe center angles to take advantage of the different fuel delivery characteristics.

To switch the cam, you need to remove most of the head bolts. I've never done it with success and have turned the job into a valve job too often.
I just got back from a week in LA and found the ecology yard in San Diego on Heritage Rd (805S -> 905E -> Left on Heritage) had a nice 280se, but there are no plugs in the motor. I didn't remove the valve cover to look at the cam. I suspect that it's "just fine". -CTH |
