Hi There

I am looking at a 1967 250s sedan and am wondering if there are any thoughts out there about this car and what to look for when buying one. I am new to this model ( am a bmw man ) however I have been captured by this beautiful specimen. any help would be great.

Just my opinion - condition of the wood trim will tell you condition of the entire car, if its been stored outside, kept clean, etc. And believe it or not, the death knell on alot of these old 108's is the heat blower motor that's near impossible to access.

If you are test driving the 250S this weekend look for smoke at stone cold startup (valve seals); wandering front suspension (kingpins or tie rods); scorched brown tranny fluid (should be red) and/or tranny flaring in between shifts.

Good idea is stick your head under the hood while the owner starts the car too, listen for stumbling ignition (points, vacuum advance) and unsteady idling of Zenith carbs (automatic choke, carb accelerator pumps - worst case scenario air leaks caused by WARPED carb bodies).

And the service history? Should have had new engine mounts and suspension bushings by now. And head work / valve job if its at/near 150k miles.

those old carbs dont have a really good reputation for being dependable even when a few years old so good chance they wont be very good on one this age. or they could be replaced with webers. if so look carefully to be sure they are installed correctly with respect to sealing up without allowing leaks around the air filter.

otherwise the dog about summed it up.

they have a tendency to rust rust rust. unless you are in texas.

overall quality of the car is excellent with elegant looks.

good luck

beauty is more than skin deep. On a benz, it starts with the underside chassis. Make sure the car gets on a lift and you poke around down there looking for rust. As a BMW guy, you should know what happened to the many 2002's that are no longer on the road. The mercedes follow the same rust patterns. Don't let pretty cosmetics fool you into skiping an underside inspection.
