New Idea on no start ,79 300cd
Has been 2 months sinse originally starting this project ,I dont wont to give up on this motor till ive run out of ideas,rethinking things for a while,heres her original probs. Slow turning ,no coughs,checked grounds ,big hot battery ,dissconnected most belts,new starter,fresh fuel from can ,new fuel filters,new glow plugs and working.
The prob is its slow turning motor,may this be a clogged exhaust pipe,the converter?The glow plug holes also had carbon build up ,as i put the new g plugs in I pulled one back out and noticed the dry carbon on the plug.Should my next move be drop the exhaust,pull the g plugs ,whip around in the hole a cleaning device on a drill ,vac out hole .Try again? |

I'd run a compression check and then make sure you have fuel coming out the injectors. Also check the valve clearances...maybe your valves are so out of what they aren't opening.
You should be able to get it started by using spray ether or plain-old WD-40 as a starting "prime" but if the compression is very low nothing will make it run. There are only two things a diesel engine needs to run...compression and fuel. If you use a starting fluid and it doesn't start then it is likely a compression problem. Slow cranking doesn't help as that is what builds compression and heat needed for combustion.

i would skip the ether. could blow gasket easily.
the wc 40 is just for a primer, but if you have a fuel problem and everything else is in order it wil run on it as long as you keep spraying it in. spray into the intake with the air filter off. tom w

If you have a new starter and a new battery and the engine is still turning over slowly then it seems like a mechanical problem. Pull your glow plugs and see if the engine spins over easily. If it doesn't then you have something binding in the engine or trans. With the gp's out you should be able to turn over the engine by hand by pulling on one of the belts. Be careful that you don't get your fingers caught in the pulley.
If the engine spins, before you put the gp's back in, bleed the fuel pump, check your compression and valves, and check that your gp's are heating up. Connect each to a battery charger and dip the tip in a cup of water. The water should boil around the tip if the plug is good. Don't touch the business of the plug when it is connected to the charger. If your gp's are good, you are getting fuel to the ip, you have bled the ip and are getting fuel to the injectors, and have compression, you should be good to go. If your compression is low, before you put your glow plugs back put a couple of squirts of 30 wt. oil in each cylinder. If the rings are bad this will bring up the compression enough to start the engine. Don't pour in the oil. Use an oil squirt can and just give it a couple of squirts. Using spray start now is sort of a moot point. If the engine has any compression it should fire on spray start but that won't tell you why it won't start normally. If you do try spray start DISCONNECT YOUR GLOW PLUGS FIRST. If you don't you can easily bend a connecting rod or blow a head gasket. Good luck |
