New, For Me, 1965 220S

Folks

On Sunday July 16 2006, I bought Mike's (Mamali) 1965 220S. Here are a few pictures.

220S in my driveway:

220S a little closer:

220S from the back:

220S side view: (W126 300SE in the background)

Classic profile:

220S from the front:

Ok, so now I have my work cut out for me.

Many thanks to Mark DiSilvestro for his hard work before I bought it. and thanks to Mike for selling it to me. He now has a W108 280SE, silver no less.

What in the world could be wrong with such a beautiful Haeckflosse that regular driving caint cure? Probly the most intuitively designed meat'n potato MB from DIY perspective, you wont even need a shop manual or repair book.

Congratulations. It looks like I have another forum member who will be going through some of the same trials and tribulations that I am at the same time. Be sure to keep us all updated on progress. I do have a few questions for you, first, what size tires are on there, and next, what is the clearance from the ground to the bottom of the rear 1/4 panel just behind the bumper or some other rear clearance measurement. Mine has really small tires in the back, but I do not think they are small enough to make it sag as much as it is now so I am curious to see how much lower mine is than a "regular" 111 sedan. Yours looks like an appropriate height, that's why I asked.

Be sure to follow my ongoing thread since I am trying to keep it updated with my progress.

Thanks and good luck,
David

And to complete the picture ...

The 280SE that Mike bought, was mine.

I am kind of sad. I like the car, but need the space. I bought it for the fun (?) of getting it running and learining about the MFI 130. Mission accomplished, and I am glad to see it to a true enthusiast.

Warren,

That your Police Interceptor in the back of the first photo?

Your new Benz is a real nice one! It's great you had other members helping you get it! No ebay type worries for you.

The car really shows well the styling advances manifest in the front end of the the last of the fintails. You'll be really happy with that one! It is really elegant.

I almost bought a used '65 220SE once, but I let it get away

I especially like the chrome script "AUTOMATIC" on the trunk lid, as if to show off that feature existed as an option in the car.

Yes that's the P71 in the background. I now have Va. antique plates for the car and I have to do a complete inspection of it. I need to call one of my previous instructors at the local Community College to get it on the lift and check it. First things first, new hoses, new engine mounts, exhaust sealing rings, swap carbs, vacuum the interior. It needs all new rubber. It's old.

Too bad you passed up on the 220SE but your 560SEC is a fantastic car.

Mike says he now has trouble backing his 'new' 280SE into the garage without the tailfins to guide him!

Meanwhile Warren, that's one the most solid Fintails I've seen in a long time. After the weather cools off a bit, maybe 'Miss Daisy' can come out sometime to visit her younger sister.

Happy Motoring, Mark

HI David

The car came equiped with 7.25 S 13 tires. The ones on the car are 185/80-13's.

Look at this page:

http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.asp?TP=1&F=111012&M=180%2E941&CT=F&cat=238&SID=35&SGR=001&SGN=01

If you look at the second frame, part #179 supports the rear axle. Part 202 is the mount and is accessable in the fron of the trunk in the middle. There may be a cover. Part 202 may need to be replaced.

There is a horizontal support, 215 etc and the rubber bushings part 235 can also be replaced. The W113 group has plans for an alignment device.

Also, check your rubber boot, part 119 or 121. If it's broken it may need to be replaced. Only split boots are available and small staples are used for crimping, part 123. Several come with the boot, or should.

The oil level can only be checked with the axle tubes horizontal.

At times, the universal joint, part 103, can break and the passenger side axle must be removed to fix it. Don't worry, these cars aren't powerfull enough to damage them but a shock to the driveline can do it.

You can tell I've had Fintails before. It's like going home.

wbain, let me know where you get all your rubber from, mine of course needs it as well.

What are the exhaust sealing rings you speak of?

Thanks
David

Please visit the following page and it's part 9. It's an insert for the downpipes t manifold to seal them.

http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.asp?TP=1&F=111012&M=180%2E941&CT=F&cat=238&SID=49&SGR=001&SGN=01

If I might suggest, please take the time to study the diagrams in the links on the following page:

http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb1.asp?TP=1&F=111012&VIN=

It's the Spare Parts Table and is a handy reference for the car. All the parts are shown in these assembly view diagrams. If you don't have a spare parts table, which is a book much like the owners manual, maybe you can get one from ebay or another member. Maybe MB Classic has them.

Fintail in Junk Yard in Rhode Island

Just an FYI...

Woonsocket, Rhode Island

Privilege Auto Parts - AKA Junk Yard.

Nice little red fintail sitting forlornly in the weeds. Seems pretty complete and decent, bumpers, brightwork, glass etc., kept up front away from the crusher cars, but I haven't had a close look.

Today, I checked under the hood for any obvious problems. New coolant hoses are in order for one thing. When driving home, the car was really loud so I checked under the car and the exhaust pipe is against the body 'frame' rail. There is also some goopy looking stuff in the exaust manifold and downpipe connection. My parts guy called today to tell me my sealing rings and rubber rings for the muffler are in. I'm going to swap out the current intake-exhaust setup for the other one, the one with the Webers. I washed out the leaves and pine needles. I also found water in the passenger footwell before I started looking at the car. I'm not suprised due to the age and the condition of the rubber seals. My neighbor and I picked up the original engine tonight. I'll be delving into it too. I'm going to get a Pertronics 1864a to eliminate the points. I can't forget the 300SE and the TLC it needs.

Obvious problem No. 1. The exhaust manifold pipe coupling is cracked. The original engine's flange is also cracked.

Obvious problem No. 2. The original engine had been 'upgraded' to Webers. There is no switch for the auto trans. Hmmm.

No so obvious problem. Someone beat on the exhaust pipes in the engine compartment with a hammer probably to bend them a little since the lower pipe is up against the body.

I vacuumed the interior and took the mats out. I also vacuumed out a bunch of leaves and debris from the hood and trunk hinge area. I sprayed the engine with cleaner, it's going to need a lot more. I bought a grease gun and grease.
