There are some conflicting issues with the numbers. The VIN is incomplete according to the russian site.

The VIN refers to a W126 chassis.

But the chassis code is in fact a W123 code.

The engine is a M115 which was in 2.0 or 2.3 liter form which wasn't in the W126 or the W123 but perhaps in Europe it was.

I cannot even locate a 123.020 chassis. The only xxx.020 chassis I can find is a 116.020, which is a USA version 280S.

Pictures would help us immensely.

That's a bit dodgy.BUT the W123 230 is the most common W123 ever made!!! a four cylinder 2.3 liter.available with either a 2.3 solex carb engine(w123 230) or a W123 230E four cylinder injected engine.
This a w123 230 (south african assembled) which I used as daily driver clocking up 70,000 in 2 years...

Yes, but you see how your VIN still starts with "WDB"? I am assuming most (if not all) 123's, by that point in time, had switched from VINS being chassis numbers to being actual VINs, which is not the number you have. Also, since the unknown car's VIN starts with 126460, you would know that if it were, in fact, the old format, the chassis would be "126.460" - which is, of course, impossible. It still lends itself to being a 126 chassis more than anything. Also, how can the chassis serial number and engine serial number of the one you want to look up both be identical to your serial numbers? Your VIN is in a standard "WDB" format, why isn't the unknown car's? I think someone is feeding you a bad VIN.

Just reading the plate you have a car built in Jume 1983,it's VIN is WDB A23A4DB 410954 ,obviously built in a place other than Stuttgart and it's model is 1230 ,
engine is a 115-538.( 2 liter?)
chassis number says the car is a 123-020,
50 doesn't say anything to me,some body else may know wehat that means and it's 123 number 127782.
The russian site never has anything much on it exept some european delivered and USA delivered cars. Not much use to us in the southern hemisphere whose numbers do not appear.Best Optio for you is to approach a Mercedes MAIN dealer and ask the service manager for a "vehicle service information " readout on your chassis number. This will give you everything regarding service records ,all factory options, exact engine trans and diff details on your exact car.

I was referring to the US cars which had a lot fewer choices than the rest of the world. As far as I know we never got 200 or 230 gas engines in the W123 chassis.

At least it's straightened out now 123 chassis with a M115 motor.

Actually, the 123 chassis 230 was availible in the US for the firt year or so of the W123 series. According to my reference, they were only availible in the eastern half of the coutry. Today, they're pretty rare here. In the last 15 years, I've only seen one that wasn't a grey-market car.

Happy Motoring, Mark
