230S point gap?
Good morning ladies and gentlemen,
Yesterday I received my new set of points. My uncle explained how I to install them and set the gap, but I don't know what gap to set them at. We don't have a dwell meter so I will have to bump the engine around to get the highest separation, then measure. I did a search and saw one figure at .30mm for a 1970 280SE. I didn't know if mine would be the same or not. I only have standard feeler gages BTW. Thanks David

David:
The correct point gap is 0.3mm to 0.4 mm. If you can find a cheap dwell meter it would be a good investment. Dwell is 38 degrees, (+3 degrees, -1 degree, in other words, a setting of 37 degrees to 41 degrees is within specs). Your feeler gauges should have dual markings for inches/mm, if it does not, get one at Sears. But, you should get a workable dwell in the range show above by using feeler gauges between 0.012 and 0.016 inch. 230/8 |

Personally I would have ditched the points and invested in a Pertronix unit. Much easier to install and much more reliable with no modification to the vehicle needed, unlike the Crane. Sorry David I don't have any tech advice to add here.

I have yet to hear this car run Adam, and besides that, I am broke but would one day like to upgrade but there are more urgent things needed for this car.
Thanks for the info 230/8. Thanks David

Dwell Meter
It's difficult to set the gap using feeler gages. You usually end up setting them wider then they need to be. Maybe you can get a meter on loan from one of your local auto parts stores? In our area, you put down a security deposit and then get your money back when you return the tool. They loan out meters, spring compressors, compression gauges, vacuum gages, all sorts of things.
Good luck. |

I think you can take a matchbook cover and set the points. Dwell on my 220S is about 40 degrees and that's pretty close. I'm investigating a Crane 700 upgrade. I may wait for a later upgrade I have planned.

Don't forget to put a tiny dab of high tempurature grease on the distributor cam.
Happy Motoring, Mark
