Team -

Picked up the new fuel pump from American Service Center. Interestingly, the new one does not have a removable filter element, so I made a mental note to install an inline filter in front of the pump.

Anyway. Bolted it on, purged the line and hooked it up. Added two gallons of Mobil's best. Car started and ran for two seconds, several times. Had best luck by pumping the gas a couple of times, letting it sit for a minute, then hitting the starter with throttle closed.

Diagnosis - fuel problems still.

Backed up and checked phasing of Allison/Crane unit. Dead on with spark at 10 degress BTDC. Checked and adjusted timing with strobe to same.

Plugs 1-3 have soot and 4-6 are clean and dry. This seems to be very close to Christy's situation.

Idle solenoids clicking away nicely.

My plan is to take a look first at the rear carb for clogged jets, orfices, etc. to see why it is not supplying fuel to the cylinders. I don't want to jump into full-scale carb rebuilding without a benchmark of the engine at least running.

I am also suspicious of the fuel supply, because the accelerator pumps are only good for one shot at a time.

Other suggestions welcome!

BTW - ASC has become the leading parts supplier in the area for dealer stuff. HBL is hopeless because they are trying to cover Porsche, Audi, MB, and Land Rover in less space than ASC has just for MB. If you need a part, try 703.525.2100 and ask for Andrew or Phoebus. Both have been very helpful to me. I don't want to sound like an ASC ad, but I am willing to recognize their efforts and, so far, delivery.

Chuck
