saw a 280slc Euro for sale today...
I was out and about in beautiful Alton IL today and spotted a forlorn-looking 280SLC with a for sale sign in the window:
-dull brown paint -amazingly rusty -seats have been recovered in tan cloth that would have looked at home in an early 80's Olds Delta 88 -manual transmission -bundt's -Euro lamps, but one was broken I had a 560SL that I thought was rusty, but this thing was ready to turn to dust, so I got back in my car and kept going.

A nice one.
Dave, for the flip side, see the '81 380SLC advertised elow on the forum's cars for sale, take a look, it might be a real nice car.
I have commented on it at some length. It seems you are like some of us who go by an interesting car that seems to call out for a "rescue" by a kind hearted soul.... Reminds me of a couple of cars I passed up. Once back in about 1970 in Oakland, almost bought an abandoned red 1966 Chevy Caprice coupe, with Illinois plates on it, from Hyde Park in Chicago according to the dealer sticker on the trunk, with 82000 miles on the clock and a 396, bucket seats and the full gauge package, maroon with a black vinyl top, a real nice looker in desparate need of repairs, I wish I could have had it today, though I passed on it, and then saw it a few months later, out of the impound yard in Oakland, and it had about 200 more miles on it but the owner gave up on it and had abandoned it again. In 1982 I got another chance at one, this time a white 1966 Caprice coupe, this time with a 327, in a San Francisco junkyard, last registered to some woman from Bernal Heights, turquoise brocade seats worn to the springs on the drivers side, the car had California original black plates and a license frame from the Chevy dealer in Long Beach, So. Cal. and the car had a couple of flat tires, but the body was fine, glass was fine and car a rust free California car. Later saw the very car mentioned as property in the woman's divorce decree. The junkyard offered it to me for $200, but I had nowhere to park it because I lived in Chinatown at the time and already had a '72 Skylark. Again I passed it up, but was really sorry to do it, and by then those cars weren't exactly thick on the ground, and I knew it. It would be a collectors or lowriders dream to fix up today though. Memory lane.

I'm trying very hard to discriminate between the ones that are too far gone to mess with, and the ones I can have some fun with and not lose my ass buying and playing with.

That's EXACTLY the formula, you nailed it. I still think the big Buick was a good choice you recently made though,,,

I drove that Roadmaster about 400 miles this weekend...comfy seats, the A/C will blast you out of there, needs a fan clutch so you have to watch the temp gauge in traffic, otherwise, just put gas in it and go. I need cars with LITTLE issues, not great big, huge, expensive ones. It is sad to see the way people let cars go like this SLC...makes me want to fix it just so the poor car has a little dignity, then I think about the fact that I could spend $10K fixing the rust, and how many other interesting cars I could bring home for that kind of money and I just walk away.

My $0.02, as someone who misspent his youth fighting losing battles against rust in northern Illinois, serious rust=parts car, unless you are an expert welder and structural engineer.

But, was it drivable and under 200k miles? That drivetrain would be a great transplant into an older car. The right kind of thing to buy, drive 1,500 miles home and then take apart in a weekend.

Thats what i was thinking - the ultimate 4-spd Euro 107 parts car. Betcha they'd go ape over this junkyard refugee at the SL Forum.
God only knows what kinda scarce 107 SL/SLC fidly bits are on that car incredibly valuable. Stuff like windshield visors, door panel trim and exterior chrome moldings. Never mind the 4-spd drivetrain, final drive w/autobahn gear ratio and twincam 6. And those Bundtcakes - are they the rare and highly desirable 6.5" wide versions or even the uber scarce 15" diameter rims? |

Not easy to distinguish Tom, best ID'd according to stamped parts/serial number on em I think. Even with 280 twincam the Euro 107 SLC seems likely candidate to have em. Would figure an easy $400 for the set if they're 6.5" rims. Sky's the limit for 15" Bundtcakes - saw a set trade on ebay for $895. But yeah 6.5 instead of 6" rims is an important part of Bundtcake lore, lucky if you can find em. Thinkin about your 280E hotrod project, eh? Could be the same engine/drive train configuration as this SLC.

oh i have a set of 6.5s. they are original equipment on the sec, i think along with the sl. i didnt realize they were more valuable. now i dont feel so bad for what i paid for them.
yeah, they are stamped. you can also see the difference if you look at the outside. the relationship of the center cap to the outside of the rim is visually notable. and yes they will end up on the 280e hot rod. i have a set of the 15" oe wheels from the 350sdl that i will put on the sec eventually. (not bundts). tom w
