for some reason I get the feeling I can trust the guy when he says all it needs is probably the carb cleaned and a tune up. He was honest about the floorpan rust and he did say the car ran for him before but was hard to start and now the starting problem is worse..... The car is just so beautiful and I want it so bad!!! here in WNY I havent seen any older cars near the price that seem to be in decent shape.

Pain

I feel your pain. The older Mercedes are particularly seductive. For myself, if the engine is in decent working order the only thing that would concern me is rust. That is something you have to check out thoroughly for yourself. I might be prepared to consider it if I could negotioate him down to 500.

Not bad for a Monkey

If you want to buy it for $500, then you wont be into it that much if it's beyond repair.

I don't think he would go 500 since he wants 800 firm, but maybe 600? I don't know. I know that this car will be work, but i would think of it as a labor of love. It just excites me to drive a car thats 15 years older than me, the car is 35 years old and I am 20! To drive a car without all the modern electronic crap that breaks and causes problems.

Instead you get antiquated mechanical stuff that doesn't want to work either...if you can do some of the work yourself it can become addictive...my cars just keep getting older and grubbier by the minute.

it really sounds like a 500 dollar car to me.

just tell him you really like it but you are afraid of getting too much into a non runner. apologize for such a low offer but tell him all the experts here say it is a 300 dollar car!

i never run a car down. i tell them i really like it and it has really good points but then i make a list of things that need repaired.

remember there will always be a lot of things you didnt notice that are wrong until you bought it.

also a non runner will not allow you to make basic evaluations of tranny brakes and rear end. any of these things could be bad besides the car not running. and there is no guarantee that the engine isnt on its last legs once you get it running either!

so dont be afraid to offer 350 and let him negotiate you up to 500. and dont be afraid to walk away from it and come back another day.

there isnt a very big market for 34 year old cars that arent running and have some rust!

good luck

I think you should consider looking at this

It's the same model (body shape) and a Diesel.

1975 Mercedes 240D Deisel - $300

Not in running condition now, but was driven to NJ from New Hampshire not long ago. Some rust, but no dents. Interior in good condition. Could be restoration project, or used for parts.

this is in or around Piscataway, NJ
