If he says it's highly sought after, does that mean it is?
I know it's a NuB question.

The 3.27 swing-axle was used exclusively in 4.5 108/109 chassis MBs. The 3.5's and 6's all had shorter ratios (higher numbers) resulting in higher highway RPMs (good for acceleration, bad for fuel milage, not much of a concern at the time).
People with 3.5's and the 6-cyl engines in their 108, 109, 111, 112, and even 113 chassis vehicles all seek the 3.27 for lowering their highway RPMs. Although $650 for a BIN may be steep, $200 opening bid (no reserve) on an axle in such nice condition seems like a bargain. Now, personally, I have thought about trading a 3.5's axle for my 4.5's - I don't need a 145MPH top speed and my gas milage stinks anyway, so I wouldn't mind the better acceleration. Of course, if I could get a 4-speed auto from a 3.5, I'd keep my 4.5's axle. Either one would give better acceleration, but the latter would keep my top speed/economy. Both together would probably give me an insane 0-60 time besting a stock 6.3, but I don't need that! Surprising nobody has bid on it yet...

I see these on Pick a Part cars, fairly often. Worth about 85 on the half price days,
So I don't think i agree, now a gear ratio of 3.65, that would be real nice. I am in Cali. Also it's in good condition b/c it came from Sun Valley Dismantlers, they clean the crap out of there stuff before it gets shipped.

I sold my 3.69 axle to a guy in the midwest after I installed a 3.27 axle in my coupe. BTW-it cost $140 to ship it freight.
I have seen guys charging outragous prices for a 3.27 axle. They are not that uncommon. I found mine in a pick n pull with a new Hydro-compensator on it and fresh paint as if it had been rebuilt. Tony

4.5 axle set
I put one of these in my 280SL a couple of years ago. I bought it from Adsit, who lied about what it was (I wanted limited slip, they said it was, and of course it wasn't). Some things to keep in mind:
-500-600 is about the going rate unless you do your own searching and get lucky -I have heard good things about Sun Valley as well. I would NEVER deal with Adsit again. No way. -the brakes are different; I can't pin down the exact details, but if you put one of these axles into a 113 car you then have to use 108 brake pads, which is not a big deal unless you can't figure out why 113 pads no longer fit, as I understand it. -finally....the change in axle ratio DOES make the car much more quiet on the highway. However, acceleration really does suffer- and my car is a four-speed. It's still fun to drive, but I wish I had gone with a 3.46 instead. It is really kind of slow. Best of all would have been a five-speed, but they are vanishingly rare, and 'unobtainium' expensive. |

You can almost make up that difference with a lower profile tire. |

Arthur, I hadn't thought of that. Good advice. I will call Tire Rack. It never occurred to me.
