W108 Heater Box R&R (I know, I know)...anyone have a copy of the article?

I know there was an article written about the R&R of the heater box somewhere but the link I found to mbzarticles.org is dead...does anyone have a copy of this article they could send me? I think it may have been in an old issue of the Star.

The shop manual has nothing about the heater in it...any other places have this procedure documented? I've searched here and found a couple of decent descriptions but was hoping the find that article before we start on this. I found this one here that has some steps outlined:

heater fan replacement 1970 280SE W111.026

I heard one tip is to "flatten" the top of the transmission tunnel slightly with a hammer to help get the box out once everything else is out the way. Anyone else hear of that?

The procedure to remove the heater box is documented in the 1959 - 1967 108 Shop Manual. It's good to have a copy because there's lots to take apart and almost the whole dash is affected in one way or another. The procedure for removing the A/C evaporator is covered in the manual you have.

Flattening the top of the trans tunnel would absolutely help in removing the heater box. I didn't do it when I removed mine and it's a very, very, very tight fit. Let me know if you need more help - I redid the entire HVAC system and it's still pretty fresh in my mind. Good luck.

Exclamation

I'd love to have a copy of the section from the 1959-1967 manual...I never knew that I needed that earlier manual for my '72! Does anyone have this early manual who can scan or photograph the section on the heater box R&R that they can email to me? I'm starting the job tomorrow!

Pulled the box on my 280/8 to replace the blower motor. It deffinitely pays to mark each hose and cable connection with masking tape for easy reassembly. And pulled the passenger seat for sprawling around on my back, worked from the passenger side. Caution of very brittle plastic parts. Working excruciatingly slow and keeping track of all screws and nuts it took me about 3 full days.

Doc, thats probly the toughest job on any Vintage MB. Why not try something easier like an engine or drivetrain swap? Many people junked their cars when the heater system failed.

I've got two pros helping me and between us we have like 75 years of automotive experience...we're going to get it done, carefully and right and maybe in one long day (OK, two).

Will report back after it is done.

I do not envy you with the task you are about to undertake.

Years ago, when I first joined here, someone posted that the heaterbox was suspended by a fine wire in mid air, and that the car was built around it.

Good Luck!

We quit after 10 Hours elpased with about 85%-90% of the re-assembly done. I figure an hour to two tomorrow and it should be back on the road, after I evac and recharge the A/C and refill the cooling system.

There was nothing especially difficult about the project, just lots of steps, very tedious. Now that my buddies have done one they say they could do another much faster...so if anyone wants it done and lives near New England I can put you in touch with them.

How's the windshield wood trim? Good opportunity to give it a lick with fresh coat of varnish.

It actually was pretty nice, the wood was a little warped but the finish was good. The rest of the wood really needed a refinish but I don't need more to do than is necessary. It's amazing how thin that wood veneer is across the dash.

Well, the job is finished and the new blower and heater core are cooking away perfectly. Plenty of heat and really good volume of air, especially on high setting for the fan. I'm glad I went for a brand new blower and was lucky to find one on ebay for about $90 some time ago with the idea of this job looming. It was an intense couple of days but now that it's done it's sure gratifying to push those levers and feel warmth.
