6.3 Instrument Cluster
The speedometer glass and chrome ring have detached from the instrument cluster face. I have searched through the service manual to determine the proper procedure to remove the cluster and repair the glass and trim but the manual does not provide adequate information and photos. I had this problem occur on a 280SEL and it cost $400.00 to repair in 1989 and the repair lasted only 6 months. Is there a source for proper instruction on removing the cluster face and is ther an OEM replacement face with the glass and chrome trim?

Getting the cluster out of the car is "simple", you reach up under the dash from the area of the foot pedals and remove the plastic nut that holds the back of the cluster to the car. If you look at the plastic nuts that hold the tail lights in place, this one's the same size, but made of white plastic. If you have large hands or find that you can't lay down under the steering wheel, this will be the toughest part of the job. Also, you're going to skin your knuckles a bit. If you're wearing a watch, ring or braclet, remove them first.
The cluster then pulls forward a bit, where you can remove the speedometer cable and the hard plastic oil line. You will need a 10mm open end wrench to remove the oil line. It's not very flexible, don't try and bend it. Also, don't run the car with this disconnected or you'll be wearing lots of engine oil. With those two items disconnected, you can reach the back of the cluster easily. If you want to remove it entirely from the car, you also have to disconnect the temp sensor from the head and feed that line through the firewall. This line has some flexibility to it, but be very careful with it, as it's a hollow metal pipe with an alcohol mixture in it. Break the line and you break the guage. It's fixable if you mail it out for repair. Try not to need to do that. Once you have the cluster out, it's a matter of carefully removing the screws at the back. and then taking off the circuit board and the instruments. There are not written instructions here, because it's basically, "undo it all; put it back together the way you found it." The trim ring is attached to the cluster with a bit of glue at best. Crazy glue should work, but don't spill it on the plastic, that will look gross. When you put the cluster back, you can leave off the plastic nut. If you're lucky, the last guy did the same and you can just (gentily) pull the cluster from the car now (subject to removing all those lines I mentioned). -CTH |

Thanks I think I can manage that project. What about the oil line do I need to worry about oil spillage if the car is not running?
