500 sel engine tech question (thanks)
I am trying to "win" over a hopefully new customer. This is the first of many of his cars
1978 500 sel v8 58,000 It came in running on 5 cyl bad plugs and connections (bosch plat crap) did the tune up (plugs, wires, air , oil, cleaned out the toilet bowl ) it runs good but i think there should be more to this beast of a motor in gear you can floor it and hold the breaks and it wond do much of anything but out on the road its pretty peppy kinda slow to acc but it will but i think it should be more checked the timing and the advance and thats working fine i know that this the vacume oper fuel system so its not gonna be the best but jsut thought i would ask here if there was anything else to check. thanks |

Verify that model! No such beast as a 500SEL in 1978. The first 500SELs were euro models in 1981, I believe, with the first US 500SELs in 1984. What is the VIN? If it's a 116 chassis, it's probably a rebadged 450SEL and perhaps an engine-swapped 450SEL - check the engine #!

A 1978, 500SEL ?? Do you mean a 1978 450SEL or do you mean a 1984 500SEL ?
The early 80's 500 SEL's weren't exactly HP monsters - somewhere south of 200.

Only one way to be sure - Grab the VIN AND the engine number!

Well....if it is a 500SEL, then I wouldn't expect it to jerk your neck back - just did some checking, and they put out 184HP (U.S.) - this combined with the weight, is not going to get you off the line quick - even if you do put the gear selector in 1st.
Firing order is on the intake, below the word: Zündfolge

Firing order on ALL M116 and M117 engines is: 1-5-4-8-6-3-7-2.
