108/109 Heater Blower/Core Work - My Guys WANT to do another!

If anyone has a 108 or 109 chassis with non-functional heater or heater blower issues and you haven't been able to find anyone to tackle the project I have 2 guys who worked with me on my project who actually want to do more of them now that they know how to do it. The work would be done outside of Manchester, NH in one day assuming all the parts are available when they start. When we did mine I had already bought a NOS blower and replacement core and had rebuilt the control valves and pressure tested it prior to disassembly. That way, once the box was out we could swap out the core and blower and in 30 minutes be re-assembling it.

Anyway, if anyone is interested I can put you in touch with my techs...just drop me a PM.

I know when I was trying to find someone to do mine I could not even find a tech interested in taking it on for any sum of money so I thought some people might have an interest in knowing this.

Since not having heat made my car essentially unsellable here in New England I had to just bite the bullet and do it.

blower core replacement

hi-
we have a 280SE 1972 and our heater levers are broken. we are in the process of starting lever replacement but we are assuming that our heater core will most likely be broken. at this point we don't know, but it would be great to have the info of these guys in NH, just in case. how much was it, if you don't mind us asking? we are trying to be realistic about how much this might cost.

cheers,
jamie & keiran

Unless your core is leaking though you probably don't have to pull it out. You may need to service the valves, those are accessible though the glove compartment and ash tray openings and if you are lucky and they are not seized up you can remove them and buy the seals from MB to repair them in place. Is your heater blower working?

Assuming you did need to pull the heater box out I would say, realistically you can count on it taking about 15-20 man hours if someone has experience doing the R&R of the heater box as there is a lot involved. I'm not sure exactly how much they'd charge, but guessing it is $40-$50 per hour (and that's pretty cheap) you'd be looking at $600-$1000 in labor to pull it all apart. Parts are extra, but usually not that expensive if you can find good used ones. Brand new heater cores and blowers are very expensive though.
