85 300D diesel problems outside of Kentucky

Hello , A friend is having trouble with her diesel and she lives about 25 miles or so Northeast of Louisville KY. Anyone know of a mechanic in that area who might know about her type of Mercedes which is a 1985 300D and get her back on the road in it...?
This is her letter to me..."My son gifted me with an 85 300D something or other and while it runs, it runs rough and won't go over about 50 or so and it started using a LOT of fuel, more than normal. He speculated that the turbo was blown? How would you know? In my area I would be willing to bet no one has much expertise in that area and I suspect if I took it too a Mercedes Dealer, it would cost more than the car is worth to even find out.

If you have any thoughts on that, let me know. " If anyone can help please email me directly at LMAKOV@AOL.COM Thanks , 69 Coupe "LOU"

Smoke clouds? Usually blown turbos will leak or have a seized up or loose/excessive endplay impeller (take off the elbow after the air cleaner and you can check it for endplay or roughness by hand when shut down & cool)-depending on mileage, a valve adjustment, timing chain wear test, and a compression test are probably in order (use the search function for details). The good news is '85 300Ds are in demand for parts-members here would be happy to take it off her hands for the rear diff, gauge cluster, etc.!!

Have you tried looking here on the 'Good MB Shops' Forum?
I have no personal experience in Ky., but other forum members in the Louisville area have recommended 'Star Imports' across the bridge on Eastern Blvd in Jeffersonville Indiana, or 'Autobahn Motors' at 1501 Mellwood in Louisville. There may be others. Check for them on the 'Good MB Shops' forum.

Happy Motoring, Mark
