110 Chassis 200D Questions
Car is a 1968 200D Fin back. Any idea what is involved in fixing the windshield wiper "transmission" and fixing the heater vents and control valves?
Need estimate on labor hours and complexity as well as approx $ parts if A) I did my self, B) MB did it. Regards Tom |

First off, without know exactly what is wrong, it is difficult to give you a cost of parts.
That said, as far as the heater controls, they are extremely simple and easy to access from under the dash. It is a simple cable system with one operating the floor flaps, two operating rotating water valves (one for each side), and a fourth operating the air vent below the windshield. Not much to go wrong. All but the vent are easily accessible from the side of the heater box under the dash. The wiper motor and transmission are easily accessed from under the hood and under the right side of the dash. The motor is removed from under the hood. Don't know if any individual parts are available for the transmission. The linkages are adjusted and accessed from under the dash. Removing the wiper spindle assembly could be very difficult, requiring removal of the heater box, but doubt you need to go that far unless they are completely worn out. The complexity is not great and if you have any mechanical know-how, I would try it yourself before taking it to a dealer. |

Wipers
I fixed the wipers on my fintail as they had not been used since '92. The pivot points for the arms were seized solid. I removed the entire assembly from the car from under the dash. This was not easy. If you remove the heater box/controls it would make life much easier. Once I had the transmission on a workbench I sprayed it with some penetrating fluid and got the arms moving after a few days. Then I took them completey apart, and cleaned everything up with a wire wheel. When everything was nice and clean I lubed everything and re-installed it. Total cost came to $7 for new wiper blade refills, a bunch of cursing and swearing, and three or four hours of time. Everything works fine now. I'm sure if you brought it to a dealer they would just change the whole transmission/motor which would be a lot more $$$. As KCM said, the heater controls are very simple and if you take a good look under the dash you'll be able to figure it out. Be careful taking everything apart as you're dealing with almost 40 year old stuff and things tend to break if not handled properly. Good luck!

And speaking of 200D's...... Here is probly the best example I've seen on ebay all year long. I'd rate the sunroof option rarely seen on 110's equal to 5-spd tranny on later cars for desirability.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1965-MERCEDES-200D-Heckflosse-Diesel-Low-Reserve-w110_W0QQitemZ160047979961QQihZ006QQcategoryZ6329QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem (edit/update: Sold now for $1811.00 USD..... w110 200D with hard to start engine that smokes and the car needs a complete paint job. I'd call that pretty good news for 200D owners, thinkin the value of these will go nowhere but up. Last edited by 300SDog; 11-10-2006 at 09:19 PM. |
