Retrofitting Shoulder Belts and Head Rests
Hey folks,
I am wondering if someone could point me in the right direction on these safety features. I want to put in shoulder belts and head rests into a W110. Where do I buy the seatbelt kit? Do I swap the head rest assembly from donor seats or is this a kit? Where can I find MBTex to reupholster donor head rests? Thanks guys! Cassidy

i retrofitted a three point from a 123 body into my 64 cruiser (studie), so if i did that you surely can do it on a benz. the headrest i think would require a seat swap. the tex you can buy from your favorite benz parts place.

Hey,
Thanks for the response. So what is the seat interchangeability like between models? What seats with headrests should I look for that will bolt in and fit nicely dimensionally in the W110. If I recall correctly, W114/115s had head rests. Would that be a good candidate for a swap? Any others? Cassidy

Starting in the '50s Mercedes offered headrests as an option. They were attached to the seatbacks by long curved chrome bars, but were designed more for comfort than safety, and are very rare today.
Your best bet would be seats from a post-68 108/109 or 114/115 sedan, with built-in headreasts. As for lap and shoulder belts, by the mid-60s, Mercedes had factory threaded anchors in the center pillars and floors for lap and shoulder belts. I'm not sure what year it started but a friend had factory lap and shoulder anchors in his '65 220S Fintail. Remove your center-pillar trim covers and rear floor-mats to see if you're lucky. If, like my '60 Fintail, you don't have factory belt anchors, it becomes a much more complicated project. I had to fabricate reinforced threaded anchor plates, then fish them through axcess holes I cut in my center-pillars and bolt them in place. Alternately, you could cut your pillars apart to weld in the anchors, then weld the pillars back together, or cut your pillars off and weld in ones with factory belt anchors from a later car. If your floors are still solid, installing the lower belt anchors should be pretty straightforward. My floors were rusted, so I installed my floor anchors in the sills and tunnel. For optimum safety, I would recommend new belts over used ones. I got new vintage-style non-retracting lap and shoulder belts, with '60s style chrome buckles, from J C Whitney. You may also be able to contact the manufacturer, 'Beams Manufacturing' of Oklahoma City, to ask who sells them in your area. J C Whitney also had retractable lap and shoulder belts availible, but they had '70s style plastic buckles. Happy Motoring, Mark
