Becker radio with LW
I seem to remember an old MB with a Becker radio that had a LW band.
Anyone familiar with this? I like to have one for a W116 if available. |

The LW (long-wave) band is usually found on the vintage four-band AM/FM/SW/LW Becker and Blaupunkt radios sold in Europe, as long-wave wasn't much used in North America. They do turn up on eBay from time to time.

Does anybody know what frequencies the Becker SW & LW radios pick up?
Here South of Louisville roughly 146mhz covers emergency HAM broadcast drills and weather can be found at about 162mhz. Would be cool to learn the old SW/LW radios have earned new respect in this day and age. |

Shortwave bands in car radios like the Becker you mentioned and like my Philips DC777 (from the 1980s) are usually 19 meters (15 MHz), 25 meters (12 MHz), 31 meters (10 MHz), 49 meters (6 MHz), and 60 meters (5 MHz). Some have only one or two such bands, usually the lower frequencies. The older radios are rather insensitive; in Europe, the stations were all relatively "local" so high sensitivity wasn't required. Here in North America, most stations are a long way off so sensitivity is needed. With the growth of satellite radio, the use of shortwave has decreased, although there are still quite a few stations. No one makes a car radio with shortwave bands any more, unless there might be one that is not sold in North America.
Longwave is usually 100 KHz to 400 KHz. There are no broadcast stations on those frequencies in North America. My Philips has LW and there's nothing on that I've ever heard. VHF bands such as the 2 meter ham band are not found in car radios -- at least I've never seen one. You'd have to get a scanner and build it into the console somewhere.

I've noticed the AM/SW/LW Blaupunkt in my vintage DKW doesn't pick up much other than AM during the day. I think the only sound I've ever heard on the LW band is the buzz from power lines or neon lights. The unit's Shortwave works pretty well at night. It's pretty neat hearing German broadcasts in a vintage German car.
Back in the '80s, I had a Blaupunkt Frankfurt S 4-band radio in my '71 Audi wagon. It was interesting being able to receive Canadian broadcasts, for a different slant on the news from US programs. Also liked being able to pick up the FM audio from Richmond's CBS TV channel 6 and enjoy hearing '60 Minutes' and 'All in the Family' on those long Sunday night trips back from my parent's Virginia Beach home to Alexandria. I really missed the Blaupunkt when it died and the 'modern' cassette replacement didn't have shortwave or an FM band wide enough to pick up channel 6. I've seen European 4-band versions of the W123 Becker cassette radio on eBay. It would be pretty cool to have a working one for my '82 240D. Happy Motoring, Mark
