Transmission Trouble
Hi, back again.
The engine races out of gear when shifting between gears (particularly low gears and when cold, with increasing frequency) then after you take your foot off the accelerator it reengages. Automatic (4sp), '68 280SE ATF was between the marks on the stick and looked ok (red) with the engine warm and off. I'm thinking I'll change the fluid and filter ASAP. What kind of fluid do you recommend? Do you think I'm on the right track? Thanks, Basil |

Tranny fluid must be checked with the tranny warm, engine running in Park or Neutral. Run it through drive, then reverse on your way to park. Then check the fluid. With the engine off, your reading will be way off.

Sounds like it's starved for fluid. Ditto for checking fluid level on a warm car that has been shifted through all the gear ranges, pausing a few seconds in each one. The filter might be slightly plugged, which will aggravate the problem. It only takes a pint or so to bring it from low to full, so add a couple of ounces at a time, and recheck.
Don't drive it too long like this, you will toast the front pump, and that will toast your wallet. |

IMHO, ...and if you do change the filter and fluid.... use dealer parts, they fit better. Don't forget to drain the torque convertor, there is a allen head plug that can be pulled right out of the convertor to drain.

Hey, Thanks for the help!
A simple thing once you know how. It was just under a pint low. I wonder what I'll ask next? Basil (this forum's really saving my bacon!) |

Glad to hear all is well. It's nice to hear about these cars being driven, not left in the garage to decay.
