How interchangeable are '71/72 250 M130 parts

I need a cylinder head for my 1972 250 - head number 130 016 26 01 (The second 6 could be an 8?), engine number 130.923 12-012837.

I found a head on ebay from a 71 250C, with casting number 130 016 20 01 (although he is not sure about a number or two).

Anyway, how interchangeable are these heads? Will this fit my car?

Thanks much,
Ryan

Both use 130.923 engine, so should interchange OK...

It's going to fit I believe. Just wonder if it might be a slightly different compression ratio? Is there any difference from a carb'd engine to a fuel injected head? I would have though those two years would have shared casting numbers. I might do a little more checking perhaps. It could be a different engine in the car the head is coming from. Might want to talk to an older mercedes parts guy. Probably okay but never hurts to check. At least have the guy verify the block casting he got the head from and a good description.

Probably they will interchange.
The '71 engine would have higher compression than your '72. For '72, compression was lowered for most cars sold in the US, so they would be able to run on unleaded, which was only widely availible in regular grade at that time. I'm not sure if the difference is in the head or pistons.

Happy Motoring, Mark

Thanks for the replies - is there a listing anywhere of cylinder head numbers and models for these vehicles? Where would I look?

The M130 parts book or the EPC software. The M130 carb motors have interchangable parts after an early change over for the cooling passages.

The way to tell is to see which head gaskets are the same across the cars.

The big difference year to year for the heads, other than that one, will be placement of coolant sensors. Some cars have one, others have two.

Oh, and no matter what you find, it will need guides and need to be milled.

If you're talking about the head shown leaning up against the bumber, then be prepared for it's mating surface to be damaged. It's very easy to damage a head.

That's the one - I'm just hoping there is enough material left to mill it again. I know it's a gamble, but I'm not prepared to spend $1,000+.

I replaced the block in a 1970 250/8 with a block that looked much the same but wasn't quite.

The head bolted right on altho I remember trouble with an oil cooler but that could of been my fault.

The timing chain was always a half tooth off no matter how I put it on and the car never did run quite right but that was probably my fault.

Worst case estimate I've ever gotten was 500$ for machine work plust 13$ each for the guides.

My machinist doesn't like after-market guides and won't use them, They can be half that price, but they're "just not right". He does all the work for all the local benz dealers, so I don't go anyplace else and I give him what he wants and I love the results. Your machinist may have a different set of opinions.

Ask the seller to check the surface and report any nicks present. Also ask him if it's been milled before. His response to both questions might be "I don't know". A good quality photo of the surface will expose evidence of prior work. There are a couple of water passages that have a metal lining in them. If the head's been milled you'll see the lining looks it.
