Clutch Fan for 77 Euro 350SL

I recently purchased a very nice 77 Euro 350SL. I already had a 92 300E and like a lot of folks I messed around with various ways of keeping the 300E cool in the summer. One of the "tricks" is to tweak the setting on the cluch fan so that it stays engaged even at high speed. I didn't maintain this setting very long because it is quite noisy. While driving the 350SL I noticed that the engine appeared "noisy" as if someone had set the cluch fan to stay on constanly. Today I removed the clutch fan and noticed the clutch has been replaced quite recently and I'm thinking it was replaced with a "non stock" model. So.. my question is this - has anyone out there messed around with the clutch fan on this model or one like it? Has anyone replaced the clutch fan with one thta is thermistatically controlled and would be willing to share their experience?

thanks
