Replacement VIN plate?
Sorry, it's non Mercedes, but....
My father-inlaw has been restoring his '65 Mustang. Ha is almost at the pait stage and has been finding replacement decals for the engine bay etc... But a few years ago he took off the VIN plate from the door frame and it was put in a closet. The guy who started the restoration for him moved away and the plate is gone. Is there a way to get a replacement VIN plate made?

keep your eye on ebay for vin plates but what you are doing then is illegal, i know here in the UK you can order them but they have to be a direct replacment of the original. of course a brand new vin on a 65 stang looks dodgy so that will ring bells to any potential buyer

Check with your DMV about what you ought to do legally, then go from there.
Some of the Mustang forums would probably help too. I visit www.californiaspecial.com once in awhile. Maybe someone there might know, several know about restoration too.

I had a parts car for which I had a signed pink slip in hand, but had lost the original bill of sale from several years prior. I wanted to junk it, and the wrecking yard wouldn't take it because I wasn't the legal owner. Cal DMV basically told me there was nothing I could do except for finding the original owner (long gone) or paying a bond (like $5k). Signed pinkslip be damned. I ended up cutting it into little tiny pieces with a sawzall and putting them in my weekly trash pickup a little at a time. Good luck!

IMHO, I would never call California DMV or the Highway patrol about this. That car will forever be on a black list should you give them the vin and explain as you have here. I would never recommend doing something illegal. California is rediculous about stuff like this. If you removed that vin plate for ANY reason, they will require it to be re-attached with thier latest fasteners de jour, and that is IF they allow it to be re-attached. They ussually will require a new "blue vin plate" be assigned and force you to have that displayed in the windshield/A-pillar via rivets. ANY time you are pulled over in that car you will get the rectum check. That is after a total and anal acid etch of all the various serial number points on the car. If the frame is painted, they will remove any paint and acid etch/test it.
