Is this the voltage regulator?
1967 M129 in W111...
Don't know what this little guy is or does. Relay or Voltage regulator? At any rate, with the car running, just started, it gets RED HOT on the bottom end which can't be a good thing. Seems the harness breaks out from it to the alternator which, was replaced by the P.O.

Yes, it is.
And if it gets hot enough to burn your hand, you have either an overcharging alternator or an overload on the system, I'd think.

Do you have a voltmeter handy? Check the voltage between the battery terminals with the engine off, and again with it running. It should be ~12v when off, and ~14v when running.

I've got 14 across the battery with the car off and around 14.3 running. Wierd.

The voltage should read 12.6 to 12.8 on a fully charged diconnected battery but only 20 minutes or more after it was in service.. Here's a link to better explain...http://xtronics.com/reference/batterap.htm .

That is definitely an old-style voltage regulator. I would check the ground, and if it is OK, replace the unit. Bosch makes a solid state VR with a little cover on it that looks sort of like the old style.
Here is a link to some research I did on VR's. http://www.sl113.org/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=5964

Voltage regulator
Chuck, that's a nifty article on the charging system. Simple enough so that I could grasp most of it. Thanks.
