'78 450SLC- pressing gas kills engine when cold

Okay I'm not at all very mechanically inclined but my mechanic has been helping me to locate the cause of my cars troubles. Basically it starts (most of the time) but if you press the gas when it's cold the car imideiatly dies. When warm the car revs but not much past 2000 rpm. I've been told to look for the cold start relay or the warm-up regulator relay (same thing?) but I have tried pulling all the relays I see by the panel one at a time and nothing has changed. Whats more there is something that clicks that it is not one of the relays by the panel. I'm assuming there is at least one more somewhere in the same area but I don't want to go tearing things apart until I have some idea what I'm looking for. Anyway any and all help is appreciated. I did a search and got some info on the CSV, if i dissconect power to that what will happen?

Thanks,
John

richen the mixture at the tower with a 3mm allen clockwise about a 1/4 or 1/3 of a turn and it should be much better.very old fuel injection that can no longer tell temperature very well.it can be fixed but how deep is your pocket?

Okay I finally got a dry day where I didn't have to work or do holiday stuff to try this idea and it hasn't really helped at all. The car started a little better but the basic problem is the same and the idle is worse, although messing with the plastic mixture screw might help that. Still no way to rev the engine above 2000 in P and no way to drive it at all because you have to press on the gas too much to get it to move, the engine will all but die under anything more than a light touch on the pedal.

Thanks for the help and if anyone has other ideas I can use all the help I can get.

Sounds like fuel supply to me ...

... either that or something basic like ignition timing.

Can you or your mechanic do a fuel volume check? You need to unhook the fuel return line and rig it so it squirts into a container. Then pull the fuel pump relay and jumper 30 to 87, or just run 12V to the fuel pump with a jumper. You should see something like .5 liter in 30 seconds. If you don't get that volume, then look for a clogged tank strainer or fuel filter.

first thing to do with a CIS car is to use a pressure gauge and look at operating conditions. Find a mechanic with CIS experience.

You will likely need a warm up/ enrichment compensator. You can get a used one for about 30$. You can get a factory new one for a lot of money, or you can click on the various "UT Unwired Tools" flashing icons at the top of this page. Their unit is a quality replacement part for the factory unit and less expensive (half the price or so). However, I can't give you advice about its installation and tuning. I do know that 6.9 owners that have used it have raved about the result.

Is it possible to get the tank strainer w/o putting the car on a lift? I've worked around the fuel pump on my SE without one but it sits higher. I know the old fiter was totally plugged so the screen may be as well. At this point I'm not really expecting to fix it but it'd be nice to send it out to my specialist with a narrower list of things for them to look for, my time may not be free but it sure is a hell of a lot cheaper

I can't see doing it without at least jacking the rear end up and putting it on stands. I have been able to empty the tank with one of those $5 bulb siphons from Home Despot, then unhooking the fuel line at the FI and running the pump to get the rest of it out. Don't take the strainer out with gas in the tank!

I am all in favor or doing stuff yourself, but this is an excellent job to outsource to someone with a gas caddy, a lift, and disposal facilities. To say nothing of the giant hex key you need to unscrew the strainer assembly. It's not all that rewarding as a learning experience and you will stink up your garage for a week. Gas fumes seem to linger in concrete floors.
