Don,
How about a W109 with a 6.3? A little more than the $5k, but less than $10k last I heard.

As for prices, yes, 1,000$US for parts is serious money, but that's done once every 100,000km or so. The fun part is doing the work, and if you're paying somebody else to do it, yes, it will cost you.

In the US, many regard the high compression 3.5 as a better engine than the smogged low compression 4.5. I would value the 3.5 higher.

6.3's have rear diffs for lunch, and the M100 engine is not a cheap date.

I had a '71 300SEL 3.5, with limited slip.

230hp, out of the box, 0-60 in 9.5 seconds. The short stroke and high compression coupled with the fluid coupling 4 speed makes them a sleeper. OEM parts are real expensive, and many parts are unique to W109 cars. A decent 3.5 goes for 6k to 13k, anything less is a rolling parts car.

Ditto that.

The M100 injection system is big $$$, as is the water pump.

I stand corrected Paul however for my final 2 cents worth I'd have teh 3.5 rather than the 4.5 anyday......unless you've done a headswap of course
