Camshaft Swap
I have a 76 450 SEL and the camshafts have started to make a racket, especially when listening with a stethescope. R.S. camshaft number is 01B or B10 stamped at rear end and the L.S. number is T00 or 00T.
I have a 75 450 SEL donor car , Vin number 116033 045072. The R.H. camshaft number is 117 01. Haven't taken off the L.H. side yet. Question 1, are the 75 camshafts interchangeable with the 76 ? Question 2, if swapable then do I have to swap the towers and rockers as well? Question 3, is there a site where I can get all this interchangability info? Milt.

1976 and up V8's had hydraulic cams...check lifters for mechanical or hydraulic.
1975 to 1977 cams where 54 or 55 left and 56 or 57 on right. '78 up's had 00 on left and 01 on right.....with different timing spec's for each side. 117 is engine = 450 block All USA where 8.0 to 1 C/R. A very few 380 SL cars had 450's due to emission crap pulling the power down. 116 = 380 block. btw......500's where 4973cc and where also 117 blocks. .

1) Sort of.
2) Yes - towers because oil journals were moved from the rear cam bearing to the tower (or vice versa? I forget) 3) Mine - soon. But not yet. Clarification: The 75 cams are from a D-Jet engine with mechanical studs. You have K-Jet cams with hydraulic studs. The cam timing is more aggressive on earlier ones - you'll need to set your mixture differently more likely. Swap: Cams, matching towers, and matching rockers (keeping the correct rocker with the matching cam lobe, unless you use new rockers, to avoid uneven wear chewing through the new cam/rocker rapidly). Also remove your hydraulic ball studs and put on the mechanical ones. You will then need to adjust them to the different valve specs on your new head, as those valves surely wore differently than the donor's. It'll take some time, but you will gain better performance with the more aggressive cams (maybe 10 HP+)

Camshaft swap
O.K., Thanks for your replies. You got me going in the right direction. On the C.D. for my year it seems to indicate that "OO" is correct for the left side and "O1" is correct for the right side. That matches what I have on the 1976 and that is what I have on the late 1975. The 1975 seems to me to have hydralic lifters as there are no spring clips on my lifters. I now find that the L.H. camshaft on the 75 has a defect right in the middle of one of the lobes(looks like porosity) so thats no good. The R.H. camshaft is good.
Checking the camshafts one the 1976 I find the L.H. seems good but one of the lobes on the R.H. seems bad. When I run my fingernail over the contact surface on the lobe I can feel a hilly surface. This car has just hit the 200K mile mark and I am thinking I may outlive it. I have a 72 van which looks to me like thats going to be here after I go around the bend. Milt.
