W114 280E Rear Axle

My 114 280E has begun to develop a rumble from the rear diff along with a whine, both really only noticable under load. So I'm suspecting carrier or rear pinion bearing failure.
Can someone advise how the preload is set on these? Shim or threaded nut?
I'm trying to determine if it's a job I can do at home. btw I've spent 22 years as an auto tech so I've got reasonable knowledge/skills but if there's special tools etc required, it may be best to either get one from a wrecker or get a shop to do the work.
Many thanks for any info..............

Double check the rear flex joint. I just went through this with my '73 280. I would have sworn the differential was going bad. Classic symptoms, rumble under load, whine on decelleration, vibration when vigorously applying the brakes, clunk when brakes were first applied, etc.

Turns out the threads on one of the bolts securing the flex joint to the diff was worn. It tightened but just to the ends of the usuable threads. It felt tight but it was not securing the disk. I replaced all three of the bolts and problems went away.

Thanks Mike
Definitely something to check and I wouldn't have thought of that.
I just saw some pics of the damage cause when the flex disc failed, so I had planned to replace it anyway, but I think I'll check it out first.
Thanks a lot!

Pinion nut tension

One idea is to punch side-by-side marks on the nut and the nearest reference point.
