Heat & window issues

i have a 1973 280C (gas)

HEAT
so when I turn on the heat the passenger side blows warm (the dash blower, and the defrost)

but the driver side only blows cold air!

where should I start looking? just thaught it was odd that one side is warm the other side cold!

WINDOWS

both rear windows are in the up position. neither one will work! the two front windows do work, but they move VERY slow! (takes almost a full min for the window to go down). the switch;s on the center console and the switches in the back seat will not move the windows either, i made sure the window lock button was not engaged! any help with this? I thauht trying to use a working(one of the ones for the front window) switch to see if it is the switch (all fuses seem to be good ), but unsure how to remove the switch from the center console!

again, I am very new to all of this.. so please dumb down your answers for me! (thanks, I dont know much about cars! but gotta start to learn sometime!)

That's because there are separate heater cores and valves for the left and right sides. Chances are the left-side red slider knob has a broken linkage behind the dash. If you need driver-side heat until you can get inside the dash to check the linkage or cables, you might be able to manually work the drive's side of the double heater valve underhood, at the firewall.

The slow windows are most likely due to dried, gummy grease in the regulator mechanisim. You could try spraying some silicone into the window channels, but more likely you'll need to remove the door panels to check the regulator. First inspect for loose nuts or bolts ,or damage to the regulator (some Mercedes window regulators are alloy castings that can warp and crack after many years of stress).
If all looks OK, lube the metal tracks at the bottom of the glass where the regulator arms connect, and all the regulator pivots. I like to use a pump can with oil here as the oil will mix with and soften the dried grease, as well as run into tight spaces like the regulator pivots.

As for the back windows, your window lockout switch could be defective. you'll need to pull the master switch panel to check for power through the lockout switch with a test light or volt/ohm meter.

Usually the window switches should pop right out of the center panel, but their spring clips can get a death-grip, and the plastic switch panel may be brittle after all these years. Try to gently work them loose at their ends, with a knife blade or small, sharp screwdriver.

Happy Motoring, Mark
