If you want to be royalty...

Just saw this 600 PULLMANN LANDAULET for sale on Ebay germany (www.ebay.de - item# 170078685405). I guess with a car like this, you'd have to have a driver to chauffeur you around...

Seriously, are these cars worth that much?? Seems to be more than a gullwing.

I have never seen a 600 cabrio before. This must be one of the rarest vehicles MB ever made - and as such, demand one hell of a mighty dollar!

Jim B. 02-08-2007 11:17 PM

Very, very rare

The production numbers for the 600, from 1963-1981 was as follows:

total: 2,677 units

SWB: 2,190

Pullman: 428

Landallette: 59

They even made one or two 600 coupes, only for high level MB management.

The Germans are buying these old cars like a Barret-Jackson auction sells a hemi Chrysler product. That car has more value in Germany than the U.S., mostly because of what it stood for at the time. For many years after the war, many Germans could barely afford a small BMW 1600 or VW product, any MB was the stuff of dreams. You had to get on a waiting list to buy one, and much to the chagrin of German citizens, U.S. Armed Forces stationed in Germany got preferential treatment. With no wait list.

For many western Europeans that grew up in Europe after the war, a 600 is like one of the GM Motorama cars from the '50s.

I'd say it's worth the 300k euros - beautiful car, rare as anything MB ever made.

Translated ad and site for better Laundalet pics

Bigger pictures and ad can be found at:

http://www.autosalon-singen.de/Katalogfahrzeug_RecordView_Detail.cfm?fahrzeugID=03512_0006_02_08&languageID=de

I translated the ad (sorry for the weirdness, I am Dutch, not German, but can read and speak German). The ad says that

"This Mercedes 600 Laundalet is in an exceptional good restored condition. The quality of the restauration is hard to trump and exceeds by far the sales price of the car. A Mercedes for emperors and kings. The Mercedes 600 was in its time the crowning of carmanufacturing and was built from 1963 to 1981. The Mercedes 600 was not only technically top class - also the list of buyers from then was impressive. Stars like Maria Callas, Coco Chanek, Elvis Presley, Udo Jurgens, Mireille Matthieu, industrials like Aristoteles Onnassi and heads of state like prince Aga Khan, Fidel Castro, the Shah of Persia, emperor Hirohito from Japan and Leonid Breschnew were all among the buyers. A Mercedes 600 Pullman Landaulet was even built for Pope Paul VI.

The air suspension of the Mercedes 600 Pullman ironed out every road bump. A leather interior, telephone intercom and a separation window between driver and the five or six front passengers (?) were among the extras in the Mercedes 600. Those for who the normal Mercedes 600, which with the 6.24 meter length is still longer that the new Maybach type 62 by a few centimers, was not exclusive enough, had the option to aquire a rare feudal [not sure how to translate feudalen] Laundalet, of which according to archives only 59 examples were built. Among those was the Mercedes Benz Typ 600 Pullman Landaulet with the typical cloth cover for the rear third part one of the most exlusive cars that were ever built in Germany. Also

Technically the car was something special - with a incomparible large number of hydraulic servo systems, its standar air suspension and driving performance that one would not expect from a car this size. Its 6300 cubic centimeters large 8 cylinder engine gave 250 HP, enough to achieve even then a top speed of 200 km/h."

FYI, Elvis's car is also for sale:

I'd rather have the Laundalet for that money, even if it is totally impractical.

I also would like to know if any of you ends up buying one or the other :) I need to win some lottery or sell my house first...

Happy motoring and dreaming :)

When I was a kid my neighbors owned a 600 that used to belong to the president of the Philippines. I have no idea how they came to own it or what happened to it. It was a pretty cool looking car as I recall.

Elvis' 600 rocks mighty $$$...

Check out Elvis's 600: It's at $550,000 already! I still rather have the Laundalette. Who knows, it might have been the pope's and completely blessed...

There might be some hairs left under the floormats that you could put in testubes and sell to some baby-boomer ladies for cloning :)

I'll take a SWB model. Don't want to look too flashy!

Happy Motoring, Mark
