Car thinks key is in ignition (6.3)

Starting yesterday out of the blue, my 6.3 acts like the key is in the ignition-when its not. When I open the door with the key removed, the buzzer goes off. Is there any other thing that would cause the buzzer to go? Lights are off (not sure if they are on buzzer anyway).

At first I thought I could live with it, but now if you open the door you have to bug out or go crazy. I don't want to tear into the switch if there is something else to test.

thanks
Fred

Sounds like the sensor that detects the key is tripping the buzzer. My 4.5's buzzer died a decade ago, so I was caught off-guard when I tried a 4.5 with a working buzzer yesterday. I was wondering what the hell that sound was! Have you put graphite in lately? Keep in mind that it is conductive...

I just drove back from out of town so I have not messed with it yet. I have never heard of a car doing this. I was thinking that putting graphite in a MB ignition was a no-no, but I can't remember why.

I wouldn't put graphite in, but perhaps a tiny shot of contact cleaner could help.

If I remember correctly, the buzzer connection is at about 5:30 on the switch. Perhaps the connection has grounded to something? -CTH

Or you could just disconnect the buzzer.

My 450SEL has been doing that since I got it. The switch is actuated by the steering lock and not the ignition lock. I'd be willing to bet that your steering is not locking.

I pulled the cylinder (ignition lock) and sprayed some triflow in there but it still was sticky. I could bump it with a screwdriver and it would lock but not by itself. The odd thing is that ever since I set the CO, the steering lock works fine.

I don't know if the 109 has a steering lock or not.

It might not. I don't remember when they started putting them in.

At least since the mid '50s, all Mercedes have had steering locks, though the key warning buzzers didn't come along 'till around 1970.
