Timing case cover

I am trying to get the timing case cover off of my 450SEL. Have the 6 oil pan bolts off the bottom, the 5 head bolts off the top and 12 horizontal bolts off. It's hard to budge. Have pried one side at the bottom loose about an eighth of an inch. Does the drive to the distibutor just slide out with the cover? Anything else I may have to consider? Looked for any threads on this and couldn't find anything. Any suggestions? Milt.

I count 17 horizontal bolts. The water pump has to come off first..

Timing case cover

Benz, your probably right. I have the pump off, that's how I arrived at 12. I have the two sides and the top-middle loose about and 1/8" or so but the head gasket-timing cover union on both sides is tough. Am going to try carbuerator cleaner and or lacquer thinner on the gasket to see what happens. Milt.

Milt: Did you remove the bolts between the head and the case? There are about 3 6mm allen-head bolts on each side that attach the head to the timing cover.

Tom: I got them, 3 on the right side and 2 on the left side. I guess it's just 31 years of heat and pressure between the timing case cover and the head gasket. It's hard to get anything in between to seperate. I am trying not to ruin the head gasket. Milt.

Timing case cover

Well I got the cover seperated from the head. A couple of dousings with carbuerator cleaner and banging in sharp little screwdrivers to wedge it did the trick. But now another problem. How to get the oil pump chain out so I can get the cover off. The C.D. mentions a "curved panel" and drops it at that. I have fooled with it and can't figure how to get it off the sprocket. Theres allmost enough room but not quite. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am about to cut it and use a masterlink when I put it back together but if there's a better way let me know. Milt.

Well, I finally got the cover and chain off, put it back on again, off again. It's such a pain that I am going to cut the chain and roll it back in and use a master link. Getting off the oil dipstick tube was another problem. I ended up getting a 4 1/2" nipple the same diameter as the tube and cutt ing it in half, holding it on the tupbe with 2 vicegrips and whacking it out. Later on when I had the lower half of the oil pan off I saw that it may have been easier to just whack the tube end.
Now another problem, the bushings which accept the intermediate gear and the distributor drive shaft are kind of sloopy. I can get them out if I use a dremel but am worried about getting the new ones back in the motor block. I will have to bang them in and am worried about cracking the motor block casing. Has anybody done this job before and is this a justifiable concern? Milt.
