A $520 MBZ Reborn

My father and I started our Mercedes saga with a '63 Unimog - which led to a '71 280SE (a failed engine donor which turned out to be one heck of a car) - which then led to the car below.

We bought a 1970 280 SEL December of '05 sight unseen on eBay for $520.
Didn't know what to expect. We were astonished when the car rolled off the trailer. EVERYTHING worked. All the windows, the radio, the power antenna, the heater blower (thank god), and EVEN THE A/C!

Being a Kansas car it did have some rust - but the car ran like a champ and was smooth as could be. We took it down to our shop in our back yard to replace the cross member that holds up the bumper. That turned into removing the fenders - where we found rust - which led to rusty rockers which led to.... well you get the point!

The latest pictures in the batch were taken over my Christmas vacation while home from school. We actually finished painting it the day before I had to go back!

There are quite a few pictures so it might take a while to load. By a while I mean a long while – all 132 pictures are thumbnails on that first page – I might re-format it in the future…

I hope you enjoy the pictures - and I'll be sure to post more when I go home for spring break at the end of the month.

-Eric

Great job! I feel for you. I just bought my wife a "cherry" 250C. Yup, you guessed it. Grind, weld, grind, patch, weld, grind, fill and paint.

Sigh, just remember the metal workers law of entrophy," what the welder giveth, the grinder taketh away".

great job, the best however is the fact that you are working with your dad. Don't get me wrong , I love my girls, but to have a kid interested in old cars, well it would be heaven. I am trying to get my dateing age daughters to find boys with car interests, but then those guys are probably spending thier time and money on cars, and not girls.
Good Luck
