A/C transfer nightmare?

I was ambitiously proceeding with my transfer of an A/C unit from a 1970 280SEL to my 1969 280S.

in my effort to pull the ?evaporator? from under the passenger side dash I tried to disconnect the hoses from the pass side of the engine bay. however it turns out the hoses were on so tight (glue/sealant?) that I actually twisted off the hose hookup off the ?evaporator?.

1. are the hoses sealed and if so what is the best way to proceed

2. is the evaporator repairable? - can this hose connector be rewelded (i think its alum and it came right off the side)

thanks

That hose is "just" EXTREMELY tight if it is anything like the AC hose I had to disconnect from the evaporator from the '70 250C I once had. Could not get it to budge until I put two large wrenches close together on the hexheads and used a long screwdriver/crowbar as a lever to pry the wrenches apart. Finally it said "snap" and the thread started to move. I did some serious cursing about *&$#@ German engineers over-engineering their joints.

Must use two wrenches to undo those AC fittings!

If it's brass/copper, it may be possible to braze it. You could try solder too, but a solder repair will be very weak unless you can find a way to reinforce it.

If it's aluminum, you could try taking it to a machine-shop to get it heli-arc welded. Otherwise, I've seen some metal rods called 'Lumalloy' advertised on TV, and for sale at auto flea-markets, for repair of damaged aluminum and alloy items with a blowtorch. I've never tried the stuff, and don't know who would sell it locally.

Happy Motoring, Mark

You might try a good radiator shop.

I have tig welded the aluminum piping on my air conditioner (nissan) before. It is holding fine. If you weld it right, it is actually stronger than the metal itself.
