hey everyone,
my 111 manual leaves this whole rear end of mine a little unclear. what exactly is the flex disc? and what would happen if it failed.

flex disc
The flex disc is MB's answer to a U-joint. It is basically a semi-hard rubber disc that connects either end of the driveshaft to either the trans. or the rearend. They can loose their flex over time, and get a little tired in other ways. Once you crawl under there and look for where a U-joint ought to be, you'll see a flex disc.
Have fun! -Larry PS: As you may recall, WDurrance posted after I did, and informed those not knowing any better (like myself) that the W111 did not have a flex disc by the differential. [Edited by Larry Delor on 05-23-2001 at 09:55 PM]

One more time...
My original post has vanished... The point was that if everything looks okay from the outside, it's very likely that the sliding sleeve in the right side of the differential has broken. I've been through it a few times on my 6.3. It may be more cost-effective to get a used diff from a salvage yard since just the sleeve is over $600 new. Regards, Randy D. |

thanks to all who posted, I know a few got lost.
Randy,
Do you know if there are other cars with the same diffs as our oldies? (I noticed you have a 68, is it 2 door?)I cant find anything locally and don't want to get burned again. there are some old MBs at one junk yard here though. I think one is a 108.

You may want to consider the diff from a
280se 4.5 . The ratio on them is 3:27 and is a common change with good hi-way results. [ all the 6's were high rpm/mph ]. They also had rear disc. The ratio's are stamped on the case. Lower casing machined flat , driver side, where axle flange meets diff. housing. Diff from most any 108,111,113 etc swing axle will interchange. I posted before [ it got lost when the page crashed ], That I would check for a broken axle before condemning the diff. Arthur |
