300SEL 3.5... Time for a transmission rebuild?

When I purchased my '71 300SEL, reverse only worked when the car was fully warmed up. I've lived with it that way for a few years. More recently, second gear has stopped working altogether. It starts off in first... and once the revs get pretty high shifts directly to third, and then to fourth (this one obviously has the rare early four-speed auto). Am I looking at a gauranteed need for a rebuild? Or is there a chance this is vacuum related or filter related? Thanks ahead.

band band, poorly adjusted band or dead circuit for applying the band.
I think that's "2 outta 3, you loose".

There's a bolt w/o a head on the passenger side, held down with a nut around it. Loosen the nut and turn the bolt IN two turns and see if that has any change in behavior.

If it does, you're lucky (or putting off the inevitable).
