116 Windshield Replace
Have you ever watched as the star embedded in a deer hip cracked your windshield? Just a tiny crack but like taxes, it grew.
How many arms and legs should I reserve for a new windshield and gasket? Can a common windshield shop handle this or is this a stealership issue? First deer in 35 years of WI back roads! 116 300SD Greasmobile |

An aftermarket gasket is under 50$. An OEM one should be 3x that.
Go after-market. As for the windshield, there are more of these cars dead than alive, you might find a good used one for a song. A new one might be 200$-250$ from a PPG supplier. -CTH |

i recently replaced my windshield in my '73 450se. i actually had the glass guy who does all of the glass work for the local MBZ dealer do mine. apparently a lot of dealers subcontract glass work so if you can find out who does the glass work for your local dealer, this would be the way to go. if you can go direct to him/her and bypass the dealer that would be ideal.
go with an OE seal; i went aftermarket and the glass guy said it was a tremendous PIA to get it to work. it seals fine but if i had to do it again i'd go OE. i ended up with a new PPG windshield that's slightly tinted to match the rest of the OE glass on my car. i just dug through all of my receipts but cannot find the one for the new windshield and seal. i believe i paid around $250 for the new windshield and install; he cut me a deal since i paid in cash.

I had Glaspro/Maverick Autoglass (nationwide company) replace my '73 280's windshield. $235 and change. They supplied the seal. The seal separated at the glue joint and they had to replace it free 6 months later. Might have been a bad gasket but for my wife's 250C I'm going to use OEM.

200 to 250 sounds about the right price. This is close to what I paid for my 76 6.9.

I replaced the seal on my 6.9 and OE is the way to go, I had aftermarket and it lasted a couple of years. Finding the right guy to do it was CRITICAL. I found the guy who Park Place subs out to and he jerked me around before finally declining to do it. *******. He should have told me that up front-instead I waited a month because he kep telling me he was busy. I think I had Marshall Motors do it and they found a glass guy to do it right. No leaks so far!

Hi Al! I try to do mostly of my own work and really don't have trouble with installing glass. I've already purchased a whole kit of rubber from Millers so I guess I'll go with OE next time.
My problem is that I know where to get used glass but I really dont want to put in an old windshield if I dont have to. I called a PPG supplier and they said no way- your car is too old. -kurt Quote:
