72' 220D What is it worth?

Yesterday a friend and I looked at a '72 220D in immaculate condition. The car had been stored for 18 years and the owner now bought the car with 70K and has since driven 30K more . He has gone over the car with a fine toothed comb and replaced anything that it needed. He replaced the Rt frt fender with a new Oem mercedes part because it had a dent from a minor accident. Instead of pulling out the dent, he replaced the fender , thats just the way he is . Very meticulous. The interior is flawless , it actually looks like it could be in a show room, again very meticulous. I will try to put some pics up but I am not very computer savy. I would buy this car in a heart beat ,but I already have 3 Mbzs and no place to put another. I just want to get an idea what the car is worth so I can make a decision to either sell one of mine to make room or let it pass.

From http://www.manheimgold.com/car_lo.html

1972 MERCEDES-BENZ 220D Dsp/HP Eng ---Fair---Good---Exc---Show-Loan
SEDAN 1967-76 2.2/60 4C-----------------1,800--3,000-5,500-8,000--2,500

If you buy it run a compression test. Sitting that long can not have been good for the engine.

Following up ...

Hey. I'm very new here. I'm looking at various older diesel models to convert to WVO, and am worrried about the real lack of power in the 200D, 22D and 240D. My question: How bad are they (powerwise)? I have driven many older Volkwagon bugs over the years ... are they more gutless than one of those?

I really don't like the lines and overall look of the 300D, 300SD (etc) as much as the older versions, but it seems the additional cylinder makes all the difference (not even considering turbo).

Thoughts? Are these cars good 2nd cars? Are they freeway safe? Better to go w/a300D?

Yes they are gutless. 0-60 in 27 secs for a 220D. You have to adjust your driving style to this car. Personally, I've gotten used to it. It's actually a very fun car to drive. It handles exceptionally well for what it is and even with an automatic you could drive the car in a spirited manner by shifting through the gears. I've driven that car cross country and back and really enjoyed it.
Dimitri.

My '83 240D went to Florida and back at Easter, 2700miles total , 27.1 mpg avg. We drove 65 to 70 mph all the way. The car was a little buzzy at speed but not bad. MY 300D would be a better choice for the long haul (65 to 75mph) has a better gear ratio for the higher speeds. The 240D is a good around town car @ 67 HP. The 220 is rated at 59 Hp. My 240D has a 0 to 60 time of 10 minutes the 220 would be a little slower. A word of caution about the 240, don't pull out into traffic unless you have a good amount of room between the cars behind you.

Slow..Gutless...... Yes....... But they are great, you learn to drive differently. I feel very safe while on the highway etc... If speed is your thing then this is not the car for you..... But a nice reliable ride that is smooth and efficent to drive than yes!
