W111.4.072-12-002386
I was wondering if anyone could decipher this model number. The car is a 1962 coupe with an automatic. I hope to look at it this weekend. I have been told it was running a year ago when parked but they lost the key. It has no visable rust. Does the number confirm that it is in fact a 1962? Besides the rust issues what other things need to be looked at? I hope to use as a daily driver as my w114 coupe is going to my teeenage daughter. Any info would be appreciated.

No such chassis.
A 1962 in that model would be a W111.021 Mercedes 111 Chassis Model Years Chassis # Engine # 220b 59-65 111.010 180.940 220Sb 59-65 111.012 180.941 220SEb 59-65 111.014 127.982 220Seb/c 59-65 111.021 127.984 220Seb/Conv. 59-65 111.023 127.984 230S 65-68 111.010 180.947 250SEC 65-67 111.021 129.980/1 250SE Conv. 66-67 111.023 129.980/1 280SEC 67-71 111.024 130.980 280SE Conv. 67-71 111.025 130.980 280SEC 3.5 69-71 111.026 116.980 280SE Conv3.5 69-71 111.027 116.980 Last edited by Arthur Dalton; 05-07-2007 at 03:16 PM. |

The -12- means it is a factory automatic, and the 002386 could be correct, but Arthur is right: the front part does not make sense. VIN could be messed up if it was a gray market import or in DOT transfer. True VIN should be on a plate next to the hood release (at least on mine) or under the window, but may not be legible or missing too. Chassis number on my coupe is stamped in the passenger frame rail in the engine bay as well.

I called the owner to clarify the number and found out it is a 1973 280c. W114.073. Sounded to good to be true and it was! Thanks for the quick response.

Close, but slight correction here: The -12 digit actually refers to 2 different chassis factory specifications for these chassis. These are known as the 7th and 8th digits. The 7th digit is #1-LHD #2-RHD The 8th digit is #0-Manual Trans #2-Auto Trans So, the -12 in this case would translate to LHD/Auto Trans..... Just good to know. |
