W111.4.072-12-002386

I was wondering if anyone could decipher this model number. The car is a 1962 coupe with an automatic. I hope to look at it this weekend. I have been told it was running a year ago when parked but they lost the key. It has no visable rust. Does the number confirm that it is in fact a 1962? Besides the rust issues what other things need to be looked at? I hope to use as a daily driver as my w114 coupe is going to my teeenage daughter. Any info would be appreciated.

No such chassis.
A 1962 in that model would be a W111.021

The -12- means it is a factory automatic, and the 002386 could be correct, but Arthur is right: the front part does not make sense. VIN could be messed up if it was a gray market import or in DOT transfer. True VIN should be on a plate next to the hood release (at least on mine) or under the window, but may not be legible or missing too. Chassis number on my coupe is stamped in the passenger frame rail in the engine bay as well.

I called the owner to clarify the number and found out it is a 1973 280c. W114.073. Sounded to good to be true and it was! Thanks for the quick response.

Close, but slight correction here:

The -12 digit actually refers to 2 different chassis factory specifications for these chassis.
These are known as the 7th and 8th digits.
The 7th digit is #1-LHD
#2-RHD
The 8th digit is #0-Manual Trans
#2-Auto Trans

So, the -12 in this case would translate to LHD/Auto Trans.....

Just good to know.
