What is the question??????

i wish for a rev limiting rotor that i can put on my 280e so that i dont have to worry about overrevving it in the autocross.

the fuel pump relay will control that, it should have the max rev on it

t walgamuth 05-07-2007 11:22 PM

really?

on an 84 280e?

wow, that is nice if true.

do you mean to say that the rpm is stamped on the relay?

it should be, if it has the large black fuel pump relay, usually stamped in top

cool. i will have a look.

i seem to remember we replaced that last year to get it up and running.

i believe the relay is under the hood in front of the fuse box, under a plastic cover

84 280e autocrossing

the relay is marked 6600, which i assume means it activates at 6600 rpm.

at the scca autocross trial and tune session in south bend at the excellent tire rack headquarters yesterday i hit the rev limit a couple of times in first. didn't seem to do any harm.

the old beast handles very neutral on the limit of traction. a little more gas and it simply drifts sideways. get on the brakes and she slows down keeping pretty much the same path, always drifting sideways till you slow enough for the tires to grip fully. simply delightful to drive.

the 225/50r 14 hoosier tires are awesome. i settled on about 35 # of air all around. i made about six or seven runs. my best time was 44.1. the only streetable car to break 40 that i noticed was a late series mr2. there were three or four miatas, some ran quicker than i and some not as quick. i doubt that they were running slicks. there were also at least three subies with the turbo motors. i think i was close to their times but i am not sure. they too were not running slicks. there were no minis there.

the quickest car was a shifter kart which ran a 31 iirc. there was a tube frame fiberglass bodied sunbeam tiger and a similar fiero with a small block 350 which both ran around 37 something. the fiero actually ran without any glass anywhere, including the windshield! the sunbeam ran with a small plex wind deflector.

my water temp rose as i made more runs to around 90 and i worried that it might be a little low on coolant since we had the rad out on friday, so i cut my efforts short before i ran out of opportunities to run. but when it cooled down it was not low....phew.

i am not sure what class i would be in if it were a actual solo meet. this was a test and tune. it would be street touring i think except slicks are not allowed. but i couldn't find any decent tires with tread for the fourteen inch tires and the larger diameter wheels are all very heavy. i am thinking of putting back the factory springs and running h stock again as i did last year with the 500sec. .. other unclassified mercedes.

fun....good clean fun.

I love those high revving BMW and MB inline 6's!

t walgamuth 05-21-2007 10:35 PM

she sings!

i am going to remove at least one muffler so it makes a little more noise. it feels a lot like a bmw six.

they are cammed very similarly too. nice fat torque curve with good punch everywhere. pulls hard to the red line. i suspect without the rev limiting relay it would turn 7000 without trouble... but i wont be trying it.
