Solex 4A1 fuel supply/return lines?
Anyone tell me which lines are the supply and return to the carb? I am in process of cleaning the old fuel system and would like to start the vehicle on a separate fuel circuit.

Supply/return
Today, I purchased a W116, 280S with the Solex card.
The Supply/return lines are connected with a "T" just above the fuel filter. This doesn't seem correct, so I was wondering if the return is supposed to feed from the carburator. Thanks in advane.

Most Solex 4A1's have a fitting which screws into the front of the carb. This is a vacuum controlled fitting. They might have this fitting in-line before the carb but they are all vacuum controlled. If you have just a "tee" then someone has re-engineered the set-up.

Return line location
Thanks Mike for answering. Just to clarify, the return should be connected to the Slox in a different location than the supply inlet. Correct?

The return should be in the supply line. The 4A1 carb itself does not have an overflow or return outlet.

Thanks, Mike
Initially, I want to correct the "hack job" some "mechaic" did to this car. Not only was the "Tee" installed, but the vauum advance to the carb was dis-connected (and plugged at the card).
The vacuum retard port on the distributor was left open, and I need to trace its' end point, too. The archives of this forum suggested running the vacuum retard to the intake, which was the solution on my 1970 280s. Thanks.

Vacuum retard is controlled by a solenoid on the fenderwell. You have vacuum supplied to the solenoid and it is controlled/triggered by a temperature sensor. It is not a straight connection.
Fuel return is a straight connection supplied directly from the carb. |

What's this Solex card you have?

Don't have a carb #....
but I am assuming it is the Solex 4A1. Hmmm... maybe on a 1977 Euro-spec the Germans used a different carb? I'd better check this out this weekend.
