Does anyone know how the M130 heat riser control is supposed to work? I cannot find anything on the CD or in any of my manuals. My repair kits came in (at $53 apiece), and I installed one last night. The existing controls have rusted to the point that it is difficult to determine how they work.

Assume that you are looking at the front riser control from the front. I installed the new coil so that it sprirals in a ccw direction and hooks under the little post on the left. The little tab is installed so that the force of the coil causes it to rest on the top of the post. When you push the tab cw, it is against the force of the coil.

I am assuming that the way this works is that when the engine is cold, the coil provides maximum resistance to the flap in the manifold opening. As the engine warms, the coil expands and the resistance lessens, allowing the flap to open freely.

Does all of this sound right?

His anyone seen a diagram?

TIA

Chuck

The pretty picture is the "starting 1959..." manual I think.

The idea should be that the coil gets longer as it gets hotter. Longer means the shaft has to rotate.

A search of the http://www.mercedes-veterans.com archive should come up with a few posts on the subject. Worse case, contact Bernt Damm directly (BTW, he's in South Africa). He's the only specfic person I remember doing the work.

The idea is that the flaps are open (up) when cold and down (flat) when hot.

Hi Chuck,
Where did you get the parts from? Dealer only? Expensive?

I just checked the manual, you want job 14-3, which is all of 1 page and shows 2 cross-section pictures and gives measurements. How helpful. Send me an email and I'll reply with the .pdf as an attachment.
