Subframe mount DIY?
I've been searching all over for the DIY, but it's not here:
http://www.peachparts.com/Wikka/W108Subframe Is there an archived copy somewhere? I'm about to do this on my W111, and I'd like to read the writeup before I start. |

That's the link to the DIY in quite a few posts I found searching for "front sub-frame mount". Thanks for the link...it tells me quite definitively that the parts I got are wrong
I've got a 1968 230S, and pictured below is what Fastlane lists as the "sub-frame bushing kit"...what is it for? Edit: found the ones referenced in the DIY here Last edited by whunter; 02-16-2011 at 12:54 PM. Reason: repair link |

Well, since there's no such thing as a 1968 230S (or any w111 with a 230 engine) that I ever heard of, you have a 114 chassis I assume - or an engine swap or rebadging was done. In which case that guide possibly isn't for you. 111's had 220 engines or 280 engines, or the 250 or 3.5 in the coupes/cabs. Not the 230...
Are you sure it's not a 114 chassis or you have the year incorrect? What is the VIN on the vehicle itself?

Mercedes often kept the older models in production well after they started producing the next generation. According to my reference, Mercedes built 1305 Fintails in early '68, including 80 230S. Happy Motoring, Mark

That 1968 chassis is most like a 114.015. That would be a IL-6/230 engined sedan with ball joint type suspension and no swing axle. The mounts in the DIY article are for King-pin type suspensions and do not fit 114/115 chassis.

If it is indeed a W114/115 chassis then try this.
Things which aren't supposed to go "bump in the night" Be careful of the cooling fan. I replaced mine with an electric so I didn't have to worry about clearance with the radiator. |

You tell me...
The VIN on the car is 11101012109249. The title lists it as a 1968 Mercedes Benz "4 door". It does have fins, and it does have a 230S badge on the back. The engine that was in it is embossed with 1080110001 (bottom front driver's side), although the ID plate has been removed (it looks like it was broken off during the head work), and the head (which has been replaced with a gas-injection head with the injection equipment capped off) says 230 on it. I don't have a digital camera handy, or I'd take a picture of the badge. |

Wow! So you have one of 80 cars. That is pretty damn rare, too bad it doesn't mean that much in value!
If you're buying parts online, you're best suited buying chassis and steering parts for a '68 250S, otherwise call Phil. If you have the subframe kit you pictured, it's wrong. The subframe kit would be identical to any other 108, 109, 111 or 112.

Tell me about it As I've mentioned before, if it was worthwhile that it is that rare, I'd be looking for an M180 carbed head, rather than swapping the M110 in. My luck that I'd pick the one car on the 1968 list that has different bushings than I need

The subframe mounts should be the same as most any other Fintail. Often, parts databases let minor details, like the 80 Fintails produced in '68, slip through the cracks. That "68 list" is probably wrong. Have you tried ordering for a '67 230S?
Happy Motoring, Mark

No...I've gotta get back in touch with Fastlane and see if they can give me an exchange or something. I was going to do the replacement last night, so that's the first time I'd opened the box. But for some reason I couldn't figure out where the mounts were supposed to go

Ditto. The Fastlane database is wrong for the 110/111 cars on this particular item.
