Hard starting my 76 450SEL 6.9

All,

I've decided to sell my 76 Euro 450SEL 6.9 and need to list it on eBay. If it weren't for the fact that someone did a coil spring conversion and threw out the hydraulics, I would list it as a restoration project but for now. I'll probably just list it as a parts car.

That said. When I first got the car last September, it started pretty quickly and ran OK until you revved it to 2000RPM. Then it would onto want to go any further. In Jan I had the car repaired in 906G Metallic blue (base and clear) the painter did not do a good job. Since the paint job, it is very hard to get it started. I'm not sure if it's related or not, I do not see any shorts and the starter turns quickly, it just never seems to fire. I sprayed it with carb cleaner and it fired, but only enough to burn up the carb cleaner. There is fuel in the tank and the fuel pump seems OK. Any ideas?

If the warm-up regulator is going south, it can cause starting problems. The coolant temp is too high for the CSV to fire, so starting depends on the WUR working right.

Also, you may not be getting enough fuel pressure to open the injectors.

Can you check the system pressure and control pressure? Should be 5.6 and about 1.5 bars respectively.

I think you may be on the button with the WUR. Does anyone know if the 6.9 WUR is the same as the 4.5?

Thanks

I don't know for sure, but it's safe to say that they are different: a) everything about the 6.9 is different, b) even 4.5 WUR's seem to be different based on year and type (euro, federal, California).

But with that said, I think that just about any WUR from a V8 (maybe even a 6) would work well enough to get the car running. You need it to supply a control pressure of around 1.5 bar cold, around 3.5 bar hot, and that drops when you blip the throttle. The pre-installation test is that there is resistance of 20-40 ohms across the electrical connectors, and you need to have 12V of power to it when the FP is running.

Five minutes with a guage will tell you a lot.
