Hi All,

Can anyone recognise the following parts from my W114 M110 D-Jet Mercedes. I recently bought it and found these hanging around the engine bay - I think they need a home!;

Pic1 Items #1 & #2 - a elbow fitting screws in here and a solid black hose connected to it but the other end was just hanging amoungst all the pipes under the inlet manifold. The fitting goes into the engine and comes out near the timing chain. There is a similar type hose (Item #2) that comes from lower down the engine and is currently blocked off. Does anyone know what these do and where they should go? Could they be some sort of case ventilation?

Pic2 Items #3 & #4 - this was also found hanging under the inlet manifold. Item #3 runs to the diagnostic socket. Item #4 (which looks like its been cut at both ends) looks similar to an ignition lead, as in its heavily insulated with a wire core inside. Does anyonw know what this does and where is should go? My guess is it might be diagnostic only, but I am unsure. I can't find anything in my manual to tell me.

Any help would be much appretiated. The car starts, idles and runs great except for a stutter or miss that pops in and out at part throttle speeds only lasting a split second. I have changed the plugs, leads, cap, rotor, points, fuel filter at the last service but still no joy.

Sounds like you've got a non-USA spec car.

M110 engines in USA W114 cars were carb'ed and you have the electronic FI that predates the CIS.

Might be some similarity to the early 4.5L V-8 setups, but I've never seen the configuration you have. The M110 injected engines I'm somewhat familiar with had the later CIS injection, which is 75- or 76 when it was introduced.

#1 appears to be added by someone
#2 appears to be the crankcase breather hose.
#3/4 is the pick-up & wiring for the OLD MB diagnostic tool.

So the MB diagnostic tool (#3 & 4) would have no effect on the running of the engine? Out of curiosity, what and where did that cable that appears to be cut off run? What sort of diagnostics did it provide?

The fitting that has been added (#1) is a strange one, not sure why they would have done it. I took the valve cover off and it just runs into the casing where the cams and timing gears sit. The other tube (#2) which you suggest is a crankcase breather is not connected either! Any idea where it should hook upto? Somewhere on the intake manifold I suppose?

Jim, yes my car is a UK import. The last year and month of the W114 (Jan 1976) with the electronic fuel injection (Bosch D-Jetronic).
