Smile 230S or similar w111 brake booster found!

I'm looking for a brake booster core (or a good used one) to send out for a rebuild while I drive my currently leaking one. It's making my carbs run like junk. It's a 1967 230S with the M180 engine. Any help appreciated, I'm located in Boston and I was going to use "Power Brake Exchange" in San Jose, CA.

Just an idea....... Might not be too much of a stretch for 108 or 114/115 brake booster and pedal arrangement to be interchangable with your '67 111. Heck I'd park the 230S next to each and do visual comparison for master cylinder interchangability too. Could be just need to drill new holes in firewall sheetmetal for total system upgrade to 1973-76 specs with readily available used parts. And its completely kosher to swap Vintage MB parts across generations, often done. Might even be path of least resistance compared with expensive rebuild of earlier version booster. And among 111's all sorts of master cyl variations occurred, you want to avoid ever having to replace the 111 MC.

(edit: And seek out somebody named 'Kyle' here on the forums. I met him back in 2003 when visiting at New England GTG. He's got family connections with an MB specialty junkyard somewhere in Rhode Island.

My EPC shows a "repair kit" listed for the brake booster on my W111...is it possible this could be all you would need to repair it? The PN is 0005863443.

I'm also thinking I may have a vacuum leak at my booster but haven't had time to isolate it to determine if it is the cause of my latest poor-running condition.

Hmmm, that's interesting re: the later booster conversion. I might go that route if nothing else turns up. M-B wants ridiculous money for the part. Having an original unit rebuilt costs peanuts compared to the new one. I'd have sent mine out last week if I didn't need to move/drive the car occasionally.

Out of curiosity what do they charge to rebuild it?

Benz wants 900-some odd dollars for the part. The rebuild is *I believe* between 150 and 200. Presently, I've been going the unplug-the-booster-and-cap-off-intake route and it's been working fine. I drove a 56 buick which stopped worse than that in perfect working order. It'd be nice to actually fix my car though...

That price for the part seems unbelievable...I'll check into it myself and see what my sources find.

I wondered how it would be without boost..let us know how you do with the rebuilder and if you'd use them again.

I figured I would just turn the check valve around and see if it proved the vacuum leak was from the booster or not to test. If it clears it up I'd just leave it that way for now and look into rebuilding it.

I believe the W108 booster is the same or similar to the one on the W111. The W114/115 use a shorter but larger diameter 'pancake' style booster, compared to the longer 'cylinder' style used on the W108 and W111.

I saw Steve Walters 220SE Mexican Panamerican Rally car at HBL MB in Tysons last December and he had replaced the brake booster with a smaller more modern one, and a rather large MB spacer between the firewall and booster, maybe one from a W113 SL, but definetly not a W111 version.

Visited Larry Perkins collection in Louisville and he'd installed pedal and booster, probly master cyl too in 110 sedan from w123 if memory serves me well. I believe if you go whole hog on the replacement then anything's possible. Lots of room on the 111 firewall.

There might not be a need! I think I may have a lead on a replacement part from a national distributor for a very reasonable price. I'll post more details later tonight.

So, I've gone ahead and ordered the part from ********.com listed as fitting a 250S model from 1967. It's a gamble, but I *believe* it's the same as the 230S booster (and most other benzes of this era)

I think there are basically two kinds, the early thicker booster which is more cylindrical and the later thin booster which is somewhat tapered. Checking on my car it SEEMS to be the same. The online parts store has both types, and a third type which appears to be used on later w111 coupes and convertibles.

Here's the early type I ordered:

and the later, thinner variety:

The early one can be found under a 1967 250S and the later a 1973 280

Success! The earlier (thick) style brake booster from ******** went in without a hitch! The one issue was that I needed to acquire a later w108 elbow fitting for the vacuum line from M-B (the hole in the booster for the fitting is slightly larger - go figure), other than that it was a perfect swap and the boosters are virtually identical. The vacuum line valve is in-line and something I also ordered from ********. Remember that this stuff isn't listed for a w111, only early w108's.

For anyone with a bad/leaky booster this is a great way to go at around $150 instead of the $800+ they wanted at M-B.
