..I was thinking the AMG 300E 6.0 liter was ..umm...Over the top??.
Lots of those cars are still in Japan, often in the hands of proud owners who treat them like members of the family. It would be great to import one here but the' NO Left hand Drive laws' in OZ wipe out any ideas in that regard.

Japan is RHD but I understand that it's a status symbol to own a high end LHD car.

For the record, my 1983 500SL AMG was sold for $53k in 1983 but mine didn't have any special heads or bored cylinders; and all AMGs that came from the factory came in through Richard Buxbaum's Classic Motors in Chicago - he had the licensing agreement with Aufrecht. Richard was responsible for getting the cars in, having them certified, and then distributed to the dealers across the USA - including AMG of Missouri and Barry' Taylor's AMG shop in Cali.

It is sort of a status to own a LHD car in Japan, but they are rare.

All of the LHD cars I saw in Japan were Cadillacs, Buicks, and Volvos.

Thanks for thinking of me.

Reading this thread last week reminded me that I had received the sticker but hadn't put it in the manual.

I did it last weekend.

OT: Fire Extinguisher

I see the AMG has the optional (original) fire extinguisher fitted: my 560SEC (Euro) also has this fitted:

I never could get a clear answer on this from the mailing list, maybe one of you could chime in (though this is probably the wrong forum) - I know the fire extinguishers were all the rage in the 1980s, but how common are they?

i.e. is there some novelty to leaving mine in the car? Over here in South Africa, I have never seen another with it fitted, but I would like to know how often you guys see it over there?

I have never seen one of these on a W126 in the USA.

Pretty rare in the USA. It wasn't offered as an available option in the U.S. sales brochure for the W126, so you couldn't order one when buying the car new there.

My guess was that probably it was not Department of transportation approved, llike the European lights, trunk warning triangle, and factory european bumpers.

I suppose theoretically that, as with the warning triangle, one could be ordered on a European tourist delivery new car, then brought back to the USA as carry on baggage. But it would have been pretty heavy and awkward, and I doubt if any tourist brought one home, after removing it from his car that was to be later shipped to the USA and then certified.

The AMG outlets in the 1980s didn't stock them either. No mention of them in the AMG price lists from that area that I have seen.

To find one fittted in any W126 in the USA would be along the lines of discovering the holy grail. (The idea of having one in EVERY car sounds basically good to me)

Thanks for the reply! I shall appreciate mine, and leave it where it is (my other half had gotten used to it brushing against her legs by now anyhow - this must be the reason why it has its own piece of matching carpet, a cold metal extinguisher on a winter's morning will not go down well :-)

The Euro 84 500SEL I had for a while had one. It was still good too after 22 years, at least the meter said so.

About the 1000 SEC/SEL.
That car is for sure the real thing but just in bad shape.
It has nothing to do with a AMG, though it could have been done by them first and then handed over to the 1000 SEC/SEL conversion.

But this car:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300129002619&photoDisplayType=2#ebayphotohosting

Is a very rare thing.
The 1000 SEC/SEL did almost always have some dash board modification, some becuase of TV was mounted and some others for the benifits of some ekstra radio features.
This looks like radio features.

But also the dorrsides where different from the stock.
They most likely fittet leather and some speakers.
But here it seams to be missing though ??? thats bad and can not be bought new again.

I donīt know if im on to something but i know this site called 1000SEC.com that for sure gives a lot of these cars a huge credit and they where a LOT more than "just" an AMG car.
they where mostly the Oli sheikes Or goverments special cars or famous righ peoples choice.
look here:
This is my favorite :-)
http://www.500sec.com/1000sec/?postid=14

I know some one here where i live, he have the 500 SEC-AMG Converted by the ABC-Eksklusive.

That car is so bad and wide wich huge whells and are offent mistaken from being the Kônnig 500SEC. but itīs a ABC-Eksklusive.

Look here:

I love thouse 80 Mercedes mysterious cars.

There are two of them im ny local boneyard!

I have two W126 AMG cars in the local bonyard It is in Dutchess County NY, Home of FDR and the Vanderbilts so there is serious MONEY around there

One is a 560SEL and the other is a 300SE. One has the coveted fire extinguisher(at least until I grab it!) Have to check for the triangles.

Both were hit and wound up in the yard. Anybody know how much an AMG engine would go for? anybody want the 560 V8?
