First things' first I'd drain and flush the fuel tank screen. And surf "108 fuel pump* in archives here, believe the original pump oughta be located under the rear seat.

Pump is under the car, next to tank..

For starters, take the fuel feed line off at the filter inlet under the hood..
[ 19mm fitting ] ..slip a proper size hose over this ball fitting and put the other end of hose into a measure container on ground..
Turn key to run position and time the fuel flow into the container..you are looking for 1 ltr/15 secs.
Post results.

108 Fuel details

Thanks for the reply Arthur & Dog,

I'm sorry about the last message. I was typing on my new iPhone and really havent got the hang of it yet. Here are some more details:

This is a 72 280 SE 4.5 liter. It's a Texas car and the previous owner in his infinite wisdom took the factory fuel pump off and put an inexpensive low pressure carburetor fuel pump on there. Then he couldnt understand why it still didnt run.

I immediately took the tank out and ordered the correct 100 plus PSi pump. I have now had the tank professionally, chemically stripped. I have coated the inside with POR treatment and painted the outside the correct simi gloss black. Its soo purdy that I want to take a picture of it.

So my problem is, what hose goes where? It has a large tube out and a small one. The pump has a small hose nipple and large one (very large). The lines to the cars engine go where? and does this thing supposed to have some kind of fuel dampener o the pump outlet? Is something missing?

I'm in a lot of trouble that somebody with a digital camera and D-Jet EFI system could save me a lot of pain!!

help!!

-kurt

PS- I have a new strainer and fuel cap also :-)

Kurt:
The large hose goes from the tank to the pump. The small one is the return line from the engine bay.

large & small

so the large line goes to the fuel filer first? It has a small connection- and the pump outlet has a large connection. Unless something is missing like a fuel dampener, it doesn't make sense!

I just noticed the picture and the large inlet (I thought was an out) does go to the tank. I just thought it would pass into the filter before the pump but I guess it doesn't. I'm glad I got a new strainer :-)

Thanks! and by the way, what manual did you get the diagram from?

Have you got the right fuel filter? I aways have to be careful to get the right one for my year as the fittings changed at some point.

You always want to post the correct model on a 108 if you want correct info/diagnosis, as the IL6 and The V8 use completely different systems.
We see 280SE and we automatically think IL6- w/MFI system....................

Kurt,

Happen to have a 280sel 4.5 on the lift. Here is a link to photos of the fuel pump and associated lines. Hope this helps. If you need more photos, let me know, the car should be here for about a week. http://oldworldauto.com/Images/4.5fuel/index.htm
