Is this a US or Euro 79 450SEL??

I looked at a 1979 450SEL tonight. Wouldnt start (well almost) but not sure of it's history. It had Euro headlights and bumpers. The seats wereNOT MB-Tex but a stripped velour instead. Rear deck lid did not say 6.9L. The shifter was on the column NOT in the console. Lastly, the rear of the console had a knob which turned and was labeled A thru F. Is that height adjustment? Is this a euro car? How can I tell if its a 6.9L?

Thanks

Bert - NH

Hello Bert - You probably want to be somewhere other than the diesel forum for more responses. Vins on 450SELs with the 4.5 engine begin with 116 033 whereas 6.9s begin 116 036. If you open the hood, you will see on the drivers side a large metal tank that is the reservoir for the hydrolic suspension. There are other differences but these are the most obvious.

It certainly sounds like a European version. A post of the vin would be the best way to identify the model.
Best place to post this thread would be in Vintage Mercedes.

The easiest way to check is to look for the oil filler cap. On the engine, it's a 450 on the left fender it's a 6.9.

Ahh yes - the 12 qts. of oil for a 6.9L. Thats a pretty good tell right there! This did have a dipstick on the engine - guess it is a 4.5L.

I have never seen a W116 with a shifter on the column! I'd love to see a pic of this.
